BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a hard-fought 77-71 loss at Lafayette Sunday, the Lehigh men's basketball team heads to Bucknell on Wednesday to face the Bison. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks have won three straight games at Sojka Pavilion beginning during the 2012 regular season, continuing with the 2012 Patriot League Championship Game and a thrilling victory last January. Lehigh stands in sixth place and needs to beat Bucknell to have any chance of moving into fifth place for the upcoming Patriot League Tournament.
Â
Freshman Tim Kempton led the Mountain Hawks on Sunday with 20 points (his fourth-career 20-point game) and 13 rebounds for his fifth-career double-double. Kempton was 6-of-8 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. He's missed just four field goal attempts over the last two games, hitting 11-of-15.
Â
Senior Mackey McKnight scored 15 points including 3-of-6 from three-point range, but he dished only two assists as his quest for the Lehigh career assists record was put on hold for another game. Entering Wednesday, he needs four assists to tie and five to break Marquis Hall's career record. Junior Stefan Cvrkalj added nine points on 3-of-4 from three-point range. Classmate Austin Price had seven, as did sophomore Jesse Chuku.
Â
With a 7-9 Patriot League mark, Lehigh remains in sixth place, two games behind Army and Bucknell in fourth and a game ahead on Lafayette in seventh. The Mountain Hawks can still overtake Bucknell for fifth, with a chance for a season sweet if they win on Wednesday. Lehigh still could fall as low as eighth. The top six teams advance directly to the Patriot League Quarterfinals next Wednesday (Mar. 5) while the bottom four have to play in the opening round on Monday (Mar. 3).
Â
Each of the last eight Lehigh-Bucknell games have been decided by seven points or fewer. Â
Â
Lehigh has enjoyed success against Bucknell as of late, winning four of its last five games. The Mountain Hawks have won three in a row at Sojka Pavilion. The run began with a C.J. McCollum game-winning three-pointer in the final seconds for the 56-53 final on Feb. 12, 2012. The Mountain Hawks won there less than a month later in the Patriot League Championship Game before winning again last season despite losing McCollum to a season-ending injury less than three weeks earlier. The first meeting between the two sides was in 1901-02, a 38-16 Bucknell victory. The Bison own a 98-63 all-time advantage. Bucknell is Lehigh's second most-played rivalry (only behind Lafayette).
Â
Bucknell enters Wednesday on a four-game winning streak. The Bison won at Boston University on Sunday as the bench quartet of Ryan Frazier, Cory Starkey, D.J. MacLeay and John Azzinaro scored 30 of Bucknell's final 32 points to help the squad come back for the 63-53 win. In doing so, the Bison became just the third team to defeat the Terriers this season (along with American and Lehigh). Bucknell began its winning streak with a win against Navy before topping Army and Loyola. The Bison are led by preseason All-Patriot League honoree Cameron Ayers with his 15.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Chris Hass averages 10.7 points and 3.7 boards while Brian Fitzpatrick comes in at 9.5 points and a team-leading 4.7 rebounds per contest. Steven Kaspar leads the team with 124 assists in 27 games (4.6 average).
Â
The Mountain Hawks wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they host Colgate at 2 p.m. on Senior Day. The Patriot League Tournament kicks off next week.
