
Astor and Avery win awards as women finish second, men fifth at PL Championship

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team secured its best-ever finish at the indoor Patriot League Championship meet as the Mountain Hawks finished second Sunday inside Bucknell's Gerhard Field House. The Mountain Hawk men finished fifth. Senior Brooke Astor was named the Field Athlete of the Meet for the second-straight year, while freshman Courtney Avery earned Rookie of the Meet recognition.
"Our girls really tore it up and I couldn't be more proud," said head coach Matt Utesch. "When our top kids were doing what they were supposed to do, there was always another kid there to add on more points. We truly acted like a team and I couldn't be any happier with where we finished."
Astor earned Field Athlete of the Meet recognition following a win in the pentathlon on Friday and a 60 meter hurdles victory Sunday that set a new meet record. Avery earned Rookie of the Meet with her first-place 1.75m high jump that also set a new meet record.
League newcomer Boston University claimed the crown on the women's side with 210 team points, as Lehigh followed with 130. Defending champion Bucknell finished third with 99.50 points, followed by Navy in fourth with 99 and Holy Cross in fifth with 92.
"We knew that BU was fully loaded," said Utesch. "Our goal was to hold off Bucknell and Navy and we did just that, which really says something special about this team."
Lehigh finished the three-day meet with six individual event victories. The Mountain Hawks recorded event victories in the pentathlon, high jump and 4x800 meter relay on Friday and Saturday and tacked on wins in the 60 meter hurdles, 500 meter dash and 800 meter run on the final day of competition.
Senior Brooke Astor continued her impressive meet with yet another championship, this time in the 60 meter hurdles. Astor completed the event in 8.62 seconds to set a new meet record.
Senior Danielle Albergo won the 500 meter dash with an ECAC qualifying time of 1:15.54. The blistering pace also set a new personal record for Albergo as the senior edged out the second through fourth place runners by less than a second.
Senior Jessica Kendzor claimed the 800 meter run with a time of 2:15.03 to bring home Lehigh's third event championship of the day. Junior Victoria Mullane finished fifth in the event (2:18.07) while freshman Marissa Karl placed seventh (2:18.50) as the three women combined to give Lehigh 16 team points.
Junior Serenah Polite placed third in the triple jump with a launch of 11.39m, while freshman Courtney Wu took fifth place with a new personal -best mark of 11.17 as the two women combined to give Lehigh ten team points. Junior Jonelle Jerwick finished fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.45m.
Junior Ingrid Simon finished the 1000 meter run in 2:59.22 to grab fifth place. Sophomore Elizabeth Weiler placed eight in the 3000 meter run (10:07.46), while classmate Jennifer Markham finished ninth in the mile with a time of 5:09.68. The quartet of Albergo, Kendzor, Lindsay Voltz and Babette Hohrath finished the 4x400 meter relay in 4:02.93 to claim fifth place.
The Mountain Hawk men finished the three-day meet with three individual event titles. Lehigh won the high jump and 5000 meter run Saturday before claiming the 3000 meter run on the final day of competition.
"We put everything we had on the track today and they did a phenomenal job," said Utesch. "We scratched and clawed for every point that we earned and I'm super proud of our guys. It was a true team effort."
Navy won the team crown on the men's side with 201.83 points, followed by Bucknell (173), Army (135.33) and Boston University (109). Lehigh rounded out the top five with 105.50 points.
With a 5000 meter run victory already under his belt, senior Tyler Mueller picked up his second victory in the 3000 meter run with an IC4A qualifying and new personal-best time of 8:17.75. Junior Ryan Mahalsky placed in fourth with another personal best and IC4A qualifying mark, 8:21.72, as the two men combined to give Lehigh 15 team points.
Senior Martin Otieno picked up a pair of IC4A qualifying marks with his second-place finish in the 200 meter dash (21.91) and fifth-place finish in the 60 meter dash (6.95).
Junior Christopher Watson placed fifth in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:54.82, while classmate Mitchell Biler finished seventh in 1:56.23. Junior Justin Mahoney placed seventh in the 400 meter run with a clip of 49.67. Junior Simon Voorhees ran 1000 meters in a new personal-best time of 2:30.48 to claim eighth place.
Mahoney, Otieno, Watson and Chirstopher Del Rossi finished fourth in the 4x400 meter relay with an IC4A qualifying time of 3:19.41. The team of Voorhees, John Ciavardelli, Kenneth Wilkinson and Nicholas Molloy took sixth in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:21.84.
Freshman Lucas Warning placed eighth in the shot put with a launch of 15.36m that crushed his previous personal record of 14.71m.
Next, those that have qualified from the Mountain Hawks' squad will compete at the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Boston for a chance to advance to the NCAA Indoor Championships. The ECAC/IC4As will be held March 7-9.
