
Lehigh edges Delaware 4-3 on freshman win at No. 6 singles

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In a back-and-forth match that came down to a third set at the last singles flight, Lehigh held off a Delaware rally to defeat the Blue Hens 4-3 Sunday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Freshman Ethan Bogard defeated Tim Puterio in three sets as Lehigh bounced back from its first home loss since April 2012 to pick up its sixth win of the season.
Four of the Mountain Hawks' eight matches have been by 4-3 scores this season. Lehigh is now 6-2 overall and 3-1 in matches decided by a single point.
Lehigh captured the doubles point but Delaware won three of the top four singles flights before the Mountain Hawks captured the bottom two singles flights to clinch the match.
In doubles action, Lehigh's top team of junior Ben Gilman and sophomore Jeremy Kochman lost 8-3 but the No. 2 team of senior Timur Chernykh and freshman Tyler Hansen won 8-5 over Evan Andrews and Mike Furr. The doubles point came down to the No. 3 flight as Bogard and junior Mitchell Petersen won 8-3 over Alex Sweet and Zack Niklaus to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead in the match.
Delaware began its run as Adam Lawton downed Petersen 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Furr won 6-2, 6-4 over Hansen at No. 4 singles. In the top singles flight Gilman fell 6-4, 6-3 to Troy Beneck but Kochman kept Lehigh alive with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Andrews at the No. 3 flight.
Chernykh posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sweet at No. 5 singles setting up the winner-take-all match at No. 6. Bogard won the first set 6-2 against Puterio but lost the second 3-6. In the deciding third set Bogard posted an impressive 6-1 win to clinch the match for the Brown and White.
The Mountain Hawks will host two more matches next weekend before a hiatus for spring break. Lehigh will host Marist Saturday at 1 p.m. and Bryant Sunday at 2 p.m. Both matches will played inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
