
Ruffing wins title, Herb wins major award, both Lehigh teams fifth at PLC

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Freshman Kaitlyn Ruffing won Lehigh's second individual Patriot League title in as many days to lead the Mountain Hawks on the final day of the Patriot League Championships, Saturday at Navy's Lejeune Hall. Ruffing captured the 100 yard freestyle in a school record time of 50.51 seconds to set one of six school records between the Lehigh men and women on the final day of competition.

Both Lehigh teams finished in fifth place, with the women jumping over Colgate with a strong showing on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks crowned two individual champions in Ruffing and sophomore Courtney Patterson and set 20 new school records, including 13 on the women's side. At the completion of a very strong meet for the Mountain Hawks, head coach Rob Herb was named Women's Coach of the Meet for the first time in his career.

Ruffing's individual title was more impressive in that she barely made the A final, qualifying eighth, half a second behind the top time and .12 ahead of the ninth-fastest times. Ruffing's 50.51 in the finals broke the school record of 50.99 set by teammate Carolyn Koch last year. Koch also qualified for the finals in the 100 free and finished fourth with a time of 50.97 seconds.

Patterson followed up her win in the 400 yard individual medley Friday with a fifth place finish in the 1650 yard freestyle with a school record time of 16:46.90. Freshman Cora Summerfield finished eighth in the event with a time of 17:09.39 while freshman Valerie Lauer gave Lehigh three point scorers in the event, taking 16th place with a time of 17:32.43.

Summerfield led a contingent of four Mountain hawks who scored in the 200 yard butterfly. She set a school record with a swim of 2:02.68 in the prelims, and then came in at 2:03.53 in the finals to place sixth. The previous record was set by Jamie Grivalsky in 2000.

Junior Mary Caitlin Samuels won the consolation final with a time of 2:04.12 to finish ninth, one spot ahead of freshman Kelly Carroll, who was .1 seconds behind. Lauer posted a time of 2:07.75 to finish 13th overall.

In the 200 back, junior Alissa Leung reached the A final where she finished seventh with a time of 2:01.61. Sophomore Melissa Feeney and junior Kimberly Weyand reached the B final in the 200 yard breaststroke. Feeney finished 12th overall in 2:21.87 while Weyand took 14th a time of 2:23.30.

The 13th and final school record came in the final women's event as Koch, Patterson, Carroll and Ruffing finished fourth in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:25.40.

Navy captured its third straight women's team title with 778 points, 198 more than second place Bucknell. Lehigh finished 139 points behind fourth place Army and 33.5 ahead of fifth place Colgate.

For the Lehigh men, Jacob Moyar set his third school record in as many days as he added a new school mark in the 200 yard butterfly to his records in the 500 free and 400 IM. Freshman Kevin Huntley also set a school record Saturday giving the Lehigh men seven school records for the championship meet.

Moyar broke the 200 fly school record with a 1:49.02 in the preliminaries and then broke it again in the finals, clocking in at 1:48.74 to finish fifth in the event. Sophomore Jake Hassel reached the B final in the 200 fly and finished in 1:52.00 to take 12th place overall.

Huntley set his school record in the 200 yard breaststroke, coming in with a time of 2:02.50 to finish 12th overall.

Three Mountain Hawks scored in the 100 yard freestyle, with senior Chris Hoke reaching the A final and finishing seventh overall with a time of 45.32 seconds. Freshmen Justin White and Jamal Willis took 12th and 15th respectively with White coming in at 45.91 and Willis at 46.85.

Junior Sean Brant reached the B final in the 200 yard backstroke and finished 13th overall with a time of 1:51.98. Lehigh placed two in the top 16 in the 1650 yard freestyle with junior Danny Bennett taking 14th with a time of 16:09.52 and classmate Eric Sherwood coming in at 16:13.07 to finish 16th.

In the men's three meter diving event, junior Dan Bateman scored points, finishing 14th with 211.90 points.

In the final event of the meet, White, Hoke, Willis and Moyar finished fourth in the 400 yard free relay with time of 3:01.21.

Navy rolled to its 11th straight league title, scoring 945.5 points and beating second place Army by 305 points. Lehigh finished 185.5 points behind fourth place Bucknell and 113.5 ahead of sixth place American.
