Mountain Hawks remain on top after day two of Patriot League Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team will head into the final day of the Patriot League Championships in first place with 60.5 team points as the second day of competition wrapped up Saturday afternoon in Bucknell's Gerhard Field House. Two Lehigh champions were crowned as the Mountain Hawks in the 5000 meter run and high jump combined to secure 43.5 of Lehigh's points.
 
"Our sweep of the 5000m gave us 24 points, which is absolutely unheard of," said head coach Matt Utesch. "Our three high jump guys gave us 19.5 points which is amazing. We're set up great for tomorrow and we've got all the people in all the right places."
 
The Mountain Hawks hold a 15-point lead on Navy who is currently in second place with 45.83 points. League newcomer Boston University sits in third (38) while Bucknell (35) and Army (31.33) round out the top five.
 
Senior Tyler Mueller became Lehigh's first-ever 5000 meter run champion as the Pottstown, Pa. native finished with a time of 14:20.08. Mueller became Lehigh's first-ever 5000m event champion in the 24-year history of the Patriot League Championships. Junior Ryan Mahalsky finished in second (14:23.69) and senior Jimmy Miller in third (14:24.04) to complete to podium sweep. The three men combined to give Lehigh a whopping 24 team points.
 
Junior Adeolu Adesida claimed his second-straight high jump title with a leap of 2.09m. Senior Patrick Ciez finished third (2.04m) and freshman Daniel Boardman placed fifth (1.99m) as the three men combined to give Lehigh 19.5 team points.
 
Senior Martin Otieno finished sixth in both the 60 meter dash prelims and semis with a time of 6.99 to advance to Sunday's event finals. Otieno also advanced to Sunday's 200 meter dash with an IC4A qualifying mark of 21.99 Saturday's semifinals.
 
Junior Derek Gaul finished second in the long jump, despite crushing his previous personal best of 7.02m with a new mark of 7.14. Senior Ryan Paquin finished the heptathlon in fourth place with 4524 points. Paquin picked up first-place finishes in the 60 meter dash and long jump, but ultimately finished behind athletes from Army, Lafayette and Boston University.
 
The quartet of Christopher Watson, Simon Voorhees, Kenneth Wilkinson and Mitchell Biler placed sixth in the 4x800 meter relay with an IC4A qualifying time of 7:47.63.
 
The Patriot League Championships wrap up Sunday with field events beginning at 10 a.m. and running events at 12 p.m.
