BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After scoring the final 11 points in Wednesday's 72-65 win over Navy, the Lehigh men's basketball team heads to archrival Lafayette on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m. With three regular season games remaining, Lehigh is in sole possession of sixth place in the league standings, one game behind fifth-place Bucknell and two ahead of Lafayette, who enters in seventh.
A back-and-forth game against the Midshipmen saw the Mountain Hawks erase a 10-point deficit late in the first half, taking a lead following a Jesse Chuku three with 11:44 left in the second half. Navy opened a four-point, 65-61 lead with 2:52 on the clock, but Lehigh responded with 11 straight points for the victory. Freshman Tim Kempton began the run with a three-point play before Chuku corralled a loose ball and hit a jumper in the lane to make it 65-64. After a defensive stand, junior Corey Schaefer hit two clutch free throws and senior Mackey McKnight hit four straight to clinch Lehigh's ninth straight win over Navy.
Schaefer and McKnight tied for the team lead with 15 points. No Mountain Hawks had more than eight shot attempts. Schaefer was 5-for-8 from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range. McKnight added nine assists to reach 560 in his career. He now needs just six assists to tie Marquis Hall, and seven to own the Lehigh career record.
Five Mountain Hawks reached double-figure points for the first time since Jan. 8 vs. Army. Chuku and Kempton had 11 points apiece behind 4-of-7 and 5-of-7 shooting, respectively. Sophomore Justin Goldsborough scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting while adding four rebounds.
After missing its first two free throws, Lehigh knocked down its final 11 to help pull away for the big win, improving to 7-8 in Patriot League play. The Mountain Hawks are still mathematically alive for the fourth seed and home court in the league quarterfinals, but would need to win their final three games and have Army lose its last three. Lehigh is only one game behind Bucknell for fifth place, and will play the Bison on Wednesday evening. The Mountain Hawks have a two-game cushion for sixth place. The top six teams avoid a first-round game and advance directly to the quarterfinals.
Lehigh's win over Lafayette in January snapped a three-game losing streak (all coming last season). That pulled the Mountain Hawks within 137-81 in the all-time series. Lehigh is 6-4 over the last 10 games vs. the Leopards. Despite dropping two games at the Kirby Sports Center last season, the Mountain Hawks had won two in a row (in 2011 and 2012). Lehigh earned season sweeps in 2010-11 and 2011-12. Last year, Lafayette swept the season series from Lehigh for the first time (in competitive results) since 2001-02. The first meeting between the arch rivals was in 1901-02, a 46-13 Lehigh victory. Lehigh won the first four before Lafayette's first win in 1914-15.
Lafayette is red hot, winners of five of its last six games to improve to 9-17 overall and 5-10 in Patriot League play. The Leopards are coming off impressive wins over Loyola, American and Holy Cross. All-Patriot League performer Seth Hinrichs returned from injury on Jan. 27 vs. Colgate and Lafayette is 5-2 since. He's averaging 17.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Dan Trist comes in at 12.9 points and 5.6 rebounds while Bryce Scott averages 11.7, Joey Ptasinski 11.2 and Nick Lindner 10.2. Lindner leads the team in assists per game with 101 in 26 games (3.9 average). The Leopards rank third in the league in scoring (71.0), but give up the most points per game (73.5).
Following Sunday's game, Lehigh travels to Bucknell on Wednesday to face the Bison. The Mountain Hawks return home for the regular season finale next Saturday, Mar. 1 against Colgate. Tickets are available online, including a print-at-home option, or by calling the ticket office at 610-7LU-GAME (610-758-4263).
