Mountain Hawks hit the road for Holy Cross Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball will look to rebound from its Wednesday night loss to American when the Mountain Hawks head to Holy Cross Saturday at 3 p.m. Lehigh looks to complete a regular-season sweep of the Crusaders and win its second-straight road game. The contest will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network and fans can listen on 91.3 WLVR-FM or wlvr.org.

Lehigh's two-game winning streak was snapped on Wednesday night in Stabler Arena, as the Eagles used a strong second half to capture a 69-56 win. Lehigh led 31-26 at halftime, but American outscored the Mountain Hawks 43-25 in the second half to win its fourth-straight contest and take possession of second place with the help of Army's loss to Holy Cross.

Sophomore Kerry Kinek led Lehigh with 17 points, followed by junior Katie O'Reilly and sophomore Elizabeth Sharlow with nine apiece. Sharlow also pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds, while O'Reilly dished a team-best three assists. American's Alexis Dobbs and Arron Zimmerman each chipped in 19 for the Eagles, while Shaquilla Curtis followed with 13.

The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 42.2 percent (19-for-45) from the field, 33.3 percent (5-for-15) from downtown and 81.3 percent (13-for-16) from the charity stripe. Lehigh made 4-of-8 shots from beyond the arc in the first half, but just 1-of-7 in the closing half. The Eagles shot 35 percent (21-for-60) from the field and converted 23-of-27 chances from the charity stripe. American sunk four second-half three pointers and shot 40.6 percent (13-for-32) from the field in its strong second half.

The fifth-place Crusaders are coming off a big 92-85 win at Army Wednesday evening that handed the Black Knights their first home loss of the season. Holy Cross' Raquel Scott and Alex Smith combined to score 50 points to offset a record-setting performance by Army sophomore Kelsey Minato.

Scott was 7-for-14 from the field and 13-for-18 from the free throw line en route to a career-high 27 points while also grabbing 11 rebounds for the 12th double-double of her career. Smith, the Patriot League's all-time leader in three-point field goals made, was 4-for-8 from behind the arc and finished with 23 points.

Minato scored a Patriot League record 49 points, breaking the previous mark of 44 set by Bucknell's Molly Creamer against Lafayette in 2003.

With their 92-point performance on Wednesday, the Crusaders points per game average increased to 70.7, surpassing Lehigh (70.1) who has had the most prolific scoring offense since before league play began. Holy Cross' 42.6 field goal percentage also leads the league, as does its average of 18.2 assists per game.

Lehigh claimed the first meeting of the season against Holy Cross, but the Crusaders hold an all-time advantage of 39-17.

The two teams last met on Jan. 18 in Stabler Arena as the Mountain Hawks recorded their highest scoring first half of the season to help capture the 87-82 win. Seven Mountain Hawks scored seven or more points as a balanced attack was able to hold off a Crusader comeback attempt.

Junior Sarah Williams led the Mountain Hawks with a career-high 16 points and also dished four assists. Sophomore Elizabeth Jordan netted a career-high 12 points on 4-of-5 from three-point range, while O'Reilly also chipped in 12. Senior Lindsay Hoskins finished with 11 points and a team-leading four steals. Kinek recorded her second double-double of the season with ten points and ten rebounds.

Lehigh finished the game shooting 43.2 percent (32-for-74) from the field, highlighted by a 46.3 percent (19-for-41) clip in the first half. The Mountain Hawks shot 42.9 percent (6-for14) from three-point range in the opening half.
