BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a tough game at American Wednesday, the Lehigh men's basketball team eyes its fourth straight home win when it hosts Holy Cross on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks look to avenge last month's loss to the Crusaders in Worcester.
Â
Freshman Austin Price led the way on Wednesday night, posting his second-career 20-point game and first since the home opener on Nov. 12 vs. Rider. He finished with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting and 2-of-3 from three-point range. Price scored 14 of Lehigh's first 18 points as classmate Tim Kempton scored the other four.
Â
The Mountain Hawks had 21 turnovers, a season-high, but did force 17 American turnovers as well. Lehigh played strong half-court offense and held its own on the glass, but couldn't overcome 35 percent shooting and those 21 turnovers. The Eagles shot 49 percent, including 57 percent in the second half. Lehigh only attempted 43 field goals (making 15) while American had just 45 attempts (making 22).
Â
Kempton finished with six points and five rebounds while senior Mackey McKnight had six points and six assists, his seventh straight game with five or more assists and 16th in his last 17 games. Junior Stefan Cvrkalj and sophomore Justin Goldsborough added three points apiece.
Â
Lehigh went up 18-12 with 8:32 left in the first half, but American scored 15 of the final 17 first-half points to take a 27-20 lead into halftime. The Eagles remain tied with Boston University for first place in the league standings. Both are 11-2. Four American Eagles finished with double-figure points on Wednesday.
Â
Holy Cross enters the weekend red-hot with three straight wins and eight victories in its last nine tries. The Crusaders are coming off a tight win against Army which gave them sole possession of third place in the standings. The top four seeds earn home court advantage in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. With a win on Saturday, Lehigh could still conceivably catch the Crusaders for one of the home court positions. A loss would all but eliminate hopes of catching Holy Cross, putting the Mountain Hawks four games back with four regular season games remaining.
Â
Holy Cross has won three straight and eight of its last nine to improve to 15-10 overall and 9-4 in the Patriot League. The Crusaders are currently in sole possession of third place in the league standings. Holy Cross is 7-2 at home and 7-6 on the road, having won four of its last five away from home. Preseason All-Patriot League honoree Dave Dudzinski leads the team in scoring (15.3) and rebounding (7.6). Malcolm Miller comes in at 10.5 points and 5.2 rebounds while Justin Burrell averages 9.7 and Cullen Hamilton 9.1 and Anthony Thompson 8.5. In the first meeting in January, the Crusaders used a balance effort with four players between 10 and 14 points to down the Mountain Hawks.
Â
Holy Cross' win in January snapped a three-game Lehigh winning streak in the all-time series. That gave the Crusaders a 36-18 lead in the all-time series. Lehigh has won six of the last nine against Holy Cross, including four straight at home. On the road, the Mountain Hawks have lost 18 of their last 20 at the Hart Center with the only wins coming in 2009-10 and 2012-13. The first-ever meeting came in 1976, an 84-60 Holy Cross victory, before reconvening in 1991 for Patriot League play.
Â
Lehigh remains home to host Navy on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before heading to archrival Lafayette next Sunday (Feb. 23).
Â
Tickets are available online, including a print-at-home option, or by calling the ticket office at 610-7LU-GAME (610-758-4263). Individual game tickets are only five dollars (in advance) and season tickets are also available.
