BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team kicks off Patriot League play Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Colgate. The Mountain Hawks, predicted to finish fifth in the Patriot League this season, are tied for the best non-league record heading into Patriot League play and will be looking to improve upon last season's 5-13 league mark. A free video broadcast of Wednesday's game will be available via the Patriot League Network.
Lehigh's 8-2 non-league mark is its second-best since Patriot League play began during the 1990-91 season. The only better non-league mark came during the 2009-10 campaign when the Mountain Hawks went into league play with a 13-2 non-league clip. That team went on to win a Patriot League Championship and earn an NCAA Tournament berth.
Lehigh is coming off an 82-75 loss to Duquesne, a team that has made six-straight WNIT appearances, Sunday in the Mountain Hawks' most recent action. The back-and-forth game saw 18 lead changes and 13 ties, but it was the Dukes who were able to come out on top. Junior Kerry Kinek scored the 1,000th point of her career in a 19-point performance to lead Lehigh offensively. In addition to Kinek's team-best 19 points, sophomore Lexi Martins posted her seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and a career high-tying 14 rebounds. Martins also dished a team-best five assists. Freshman Quinci Mann was the third Mountain Hawk to finish in double figures with 11 points, for which she earned her third Patriot League Rookie of the Week award. Four other Lehigh players finished with six or more points.
Martins leads the team with 16 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. Kinek follows with 14.6 points and 8.8 boards per contest. The Mountain Hawks are shooting a league-leading 47.7 percent from the field compared to their opponents' average of 39.2 percent. Lehigh holds a +7.2 scoring and +7.7 rebounding margin so far this season.
Colgate wrapped up non-league play with a 1-10 record with the team's only win coming in the form of a 74-55 decision against Binghamton on Dec. 10.
The Raiders are coming off an 80-68 loss at Siena in their most recent action Sunday. Colgate scored 43 points in the final 20 minutes for its best offensive half this season and also shot 43.5 percent from the field for its second-best output in that category this year. However, Siena went for 51 points in the second half, shot 48 percent from the field for the game and placed four scorers in double-figures.
Missy Repoli led Colgate with 21 points, just shy of the 22 she scored during her first season in a game at Holy Cross. The senior guard was 5-of-8 from three-point range to match her career-best for made treys in a game.
The Raiders have been outscored by an average of 11.5 points per game this season. Colgate is shooting 37 percent as a team compared to its opponents' 44.5 mark. Josie Stockill leads the squad with 11.6 points per game, while Carole Harris (11.0) and Randyll Butler (9.0) follow closely behind. Harris holds a team-best 6.8 rebounding average.
Lehigh and Colgate met three times last season as the two teams split the regular-season series before Lehigh captured a 59-49 victory over the Raiders in the opening round of the Patriot League Tournament to advance to the quarterfinals.
Lehigh started the second half on a 28-9 run and held off Colgate down the stretch to capture a 59-49 win. Sarah Williams scored 13 points during the Lehigh run to help the Mountain Hawks to victory. Williams finished the game with a career high-tying 16 points, while Katie O'Reilly also chipped in 16, seven of which came from the free throw line. O'Reilly also pulled down a season-high eight rebounds. Kinek was limited to three points, but grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Mariah Jones led the Raiders with 12 points, followed by Lauryn Kobiela with 11.
The Mountain Hawks shot 4-for-7 from downtown in the second half after going 0-for-5 in the first half. The Raiders finished just 8.7 percent (2-for-23) from three-point range. Lehigh finished the game shooting 38 percent (19-for-50) from the floor, highlighted by a 55 percent (11-for-20) showing in the second half.
Following Wednesday's league opener, the Mountain Hawks return home to host Boston University at 2 p.m. Saturday before welcoming Army at 7 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 7. Both contests can be viewed locally on Service Electric 2 Sports and for free online via the Patriot League Network.
