
Lehigh returns home to host Duquesne in final non-league game Sunday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team returns to Stabler Arena Sunday to close out non-league competition against Duquesne, a team that has made six-straight WNIT appearances. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and free video will be available via the Patriot League Network.
The Mountain Hawks will be looking to finish non-league competition with a 9-1 record to secure the program's best non-league mark since Patriot League play began during the 1990-91 season.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a trip to the Arizona State Classic last weekend. Lehigh suffered its first loss of the season at the hand of host Arizona State, a team that is currently ranked 25th in the nation by the AP poll. The Mountain Hawks bounced back Sunday with a 72-69 victory over Eastern Illinois. Lehigh erased a nine-point second-half deficit and was able to hold off a late Panthers charge as the Mountain Hawks improved to 8-1 on the season.
For the third time this season, both junior Kerry Kinek and sophomore Lexi Martins recorded double-doubles as Martins finished with a team-high 17 points and 10 boards and Kinek wrapped up the contest with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Elizabeth Jordan hit four three-pointers in the first half to tie her career high with 12 points. Senior Sarah Williams also finished in double-digits with ten points. Classmate Katie O'Reilly dished a team-best four assists. Martins earned All-Tournament team honors following her performances in the two contests.
Martins leads the team with 16.3 points per game and holds the best rebounding average in the Patriot League with a mark of 9.8. Kinek follows right behind with 14.1 points per game and the league's second-best rebounding mark of 9.3 boards per game. Kinek enters Sunday's contest just 14 points away from 1,000 for her career.
Duqesne has made six-straight WNIT appearances and enters Sunday's contest with a 7-5 record. The Dukes started the season 0-3 before winning their next five games. The team is 2-2 in its last four contests, including a 67-56 loss at Providence in Duquesne's most recent action on Dec. 21.
Duquesne was led by Belma Nurkic with 11 points and Olivia Bresnahan with 10. Jose-Ann Johnson tied the game-high with eight rebounds. Duquesne shot a season-low 26.2 percent (16-of-61). The Dukes outrebounded the Friars 41-39 and had 18 second chance points to PC's 13.
The Dukes are statistically similar to the Mountain Hawks. Duquesne averages 75.9 points and 40.4 rebounds per game compared to Lehigh's 75.4 points and 41.6 boards. Duquesne has outscored its opponents by an average of 5.8 points per contest. April Robinson leads the Dukes with 14. points per game. Three other Dukes are averaging double-digit points. Deva'Nyar Workman averages a team-best 6.6 rebounds per game. Robinson also leads the team with 5.1 assists per contest.
Sunday's contest between Lehigh and Duquesne will be the first in five years and fifth all-time meeting. The Mountain Hawks are 1-3 all-time against the Dukes, with the only win coming in a Dec. 7, 2009 home game.
Duquesne won the last meeting between the two teams on Nov. 12, 2010 in Pittsburgh, 70-65. Lehigh fell into an early 12-0 hole off the bat. Duquesne maintained a 20 point lead (51-31) all the way until 11:27 left in the second half. From that point forward, Lehigh sliced 15 points off the Dukes' lead, but ran out of time. The Mountain Hawks slowly chipped away at the lead, pulling to within four at 66-62, the closest they had been since it was 4-0 in the first half. With only 36 seconds remaining, Lehigh needed to foul, and Duquesne hit enough free throws to ice the victory.
Lehigh bounced back from a tough shooting start to finish 34 percent (19-for-56) for the game. Duquesne shot at a 38 percent (23-for-60) clip. The Mountain Hawks finished 40 percent (10-for-25) from long range. Lehigh won the battle of the boards, 42-40.
Following Sunday's non-league matchup, Lehigh will begin Patriot League play Wednesday at Colgate in a 2 p.m. New Year's Eve contest. Free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
