Tournament-bound Lehigh hosts Colgate Friday, travels to Bucknell Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team looks to prolong its six-match win streak this weekend when the Mountain Hawks take on Colgate and Bucknell. Lehigh hosts Colgate at 7 p.m. on Friday and before traveling to Bucknell for a 5 p.m. Saturday matchup. The Mountain Hawks have already clinched a spot in the Patriot League Tournament thanks to their 11-2 Patriot League record. With a win this weekend, Lehigh would reach the 12-win plateau in Patriot League competition for the first time in school history.
Lehigh carries an 18-9 overall mark, including an 11-2 league record, into this weekend's contests and the Mountain Hawks currently sit in second place in the Patriot League. Lehigh trails first place American (12-0) by two games in the loss column. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a pair of wins last weekend including a dominant 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-19) victory against Loyola and 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22) win over Navy. The Mountain Hawks haven't lost a league contest at home this season and hold a 9-1 record inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
The Mountain Hawks lead the league in assists per set (11.89) and rank second in the league in a number of statistical categories. Lehigh is second in the Patriot League in kills per set (12.91), digs per set (16.46) and opponent hitting percentage (.154). Individually, junior Amy Matula ranks second in the league in assists per set (9.72), while sophomore Mariah Brantley's 5.31 digs per set also sits in second place. Junior Stephanie Slater (2.95) and senior Jade Van Streepen (2.77) pace Lehigh in kills per set and rank sixth and eighth, respectively, on the Patriot League leaderboards.
Third-place Colgate comes into Friday's match with an 8-4 league record that is part of a 14-8 overall mark. The Raiders have won eight of their last ten Patriot League matches including a 3-2 win at home against Holy Cross in the most recent match. The Raiders are anchored by senior Diane Seely whose .304 hitting percentage ranks fourth in the Patriot League. Seely also leads the Raiders in kills (190) while sophomore Kathleen Harris isn't far behind with 187 kills.
Colgate ended Lehigh's six-game winning streak in the first meeting of the season in Hamilton, N.Y. as the Raiders came from behind to pick up a 3-2 (25-16, 25-20, 22-25, 18-25, 10-15) victory over the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh jumped ahead 2-0 before Colgate rallied to win the next three sets and hand the Mountain Hawks their first Patriot League loss of the season. Sophomore Morgan Lowe tallied a team-best 16 kills, while Van Streepen registered a double-double with 15 kills and 16 digs. Matula also recorded a double-double with 46 assists and ten digs. Lehigh was limited to a .167 attack percentage while Colgate hit .192. Seely led the Raiders with 12 kills and a .321 attack percentage. The teams have split the season series in each of the past three years and Colgate leads the all-time series 36-15.
Bucknell carries a 3-10 league mark and 4-17 overall record into this weekend's action and the Bison will travel to Lafayette Friday before hosting Lehigh Saturday. Bucknell has lost six straight matches including a 3-1 decision to American in the team's most recent action. The Bison lead the Patriot League in blocks per set (2.25) and digs per set (17.17). The squad is fueled by a trio of sophomores including Erica Eastley who sits atop the league in blocks per set (1.14). Sophomore Kristen Parks' 4.98 digs per set average ranks third in the Patriot League while classmate Jordan Walker leads the team in kills with 183.
The Mountain Hawks defeated Bucknell 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-20) in the season's first meeting on Oct. 3 inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Lehigh hit a season-best .412 as a team and limited Bucknell to just .065. Slater led the Mountain Hawks with 12 kills and a strong .385 hitting percentage while Matula notched a squad-best 26 assists. The Mountain Hawks have won the last three meetings between the two teams and Lehigh leads the all-time series 42-27.
Following this weekend's contests, Lehigh will conclude the regular season next Saturday inside Leeman-Turner Arena against first-place American. The Mountain Hawks' two seniors will be honored prior to the match on Senior Day and first serve is set for 4 p.m.
