BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a big first win of the season, the Lehigh men's basketball team returns home on Sunday to host Penn State Mont Alto at 2 p.m. in Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks picked up their first victory of 2014-15 on Thanksgiving Eve when they defeated Big East foe DePaul 86-74 in front of a nationally-televised audience on Fox Sports 1. Lehigh handed the Big East conference just its third loss of the season (at the time). The Mountain Hawks beat a Big East foe for the first time since 2008 when they defeated Rutgers.
Â
A balanced team effort led to the double-digit victory as Lehigh trailed DePaul 2-0, but wouldn't trail again. The Blue Demons tried to come back on several occasions, but couldn't pull any closer than seven in the second half. Senior Corey Schaefer led the offense with a career-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 3-of-5 from three-point range. He also added five assists and a career-high tying five rebounds. Sophomore Miles Simelton made his first-career start and tallied a career-high nine points. Simelton is from the outskirts of Chicago in Oswego, Illinois, so many friends and family were in attendance.
Â
Meanwhile, sophomore Tim Kempton posted his third straight double-double and fourth in the first five games this season, scoring 16 points while adding 11 rebounds. Sophomore Austin Price scored 14 points in just 12 minutes, knocking down 4-of-4 from the field (including 2-of-2 from three-point range) and all four of his free throws. Eleven of his points came in the second half. Junior Justin Goldsborough also scored 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting while adding five rebounds. Another player to hit all of his field goals was junior Jesse Chuku, who knocked down all three from the field (including two three-pointers) for eight points.
Â
Lehigh's 86 points marked its highest scoring outburst since last season's home opener against Rider when the Mountain Hawks scored 92. It was Lehigh's most points scored on the road since Dec. 20, 2012 at North Texas, a 90-75 victory, and most against a BCS Conference foe since a 93-87 loss at Notre Dame on Nov. 27, 2007. Before Wednesday, the last time Lehigh eclipsed 80 points was last Feb. 1 at Boston University (an 82-80 overtime win). The last time eclipsing 80 against a BCS Conference foe was a 90-81 loss at Michigan State on Dec. 22, 2011.
Â
One game after not hitting a three-pointer, the Mountain Hawks hit 50 percent from long range (9-of-18) for the first time since last February at Lafayette. From the field, Lehigh has eclipsed 50 percent shooting twice this season, both against Big East foes - Villanova (28-of-51) and DePaul (29-of-51). Overall, the Mountain Hawks have hit 55.9 percent of their field goals (57-of-102) and 45.5 percent of their three-pointers (15-of-33) against the Big East.
Â
Lehigh is vying for its first home win of the season on Sunday to snap a three-game losing streak in Stabler Arena. Sunday marks the first of a two-game homestand; Lehigh's final nonleague home game is set for Wed. vs. Saint Francis (Pa.).
Â
Penn State Mont Alto is 4-1 on the young season and 1-1 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference. Four Nittany Lions average double-figure points, led by Sharif Welton at 16.2 points per game. Jermiah Mitchell is next with 14.8 ppg while Jerome Evans averages 11.6, as does Devonte Merritt. Evans leads the team in rebounding with 7.8 boards per contest while Merritt has grabbed 6.8 per game to help his squad own a dominating rebound margin of +20.2. Mont Alto is coming off a 94-70 win over Valley Forge Christian College on Tuesday with its one loss coming to Penn State Lehigh Valley by an 85-83 final. Penn State Mont Alto has averaged 91.5 points per game and is shooting 48.7 percent from the field.
Â
Sunday will mark the first-ever meeting between the two sides.
