Lehigh to battle American for first place in the Patriot League Friday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh volleyball team heads to the nation's capital for a Friday clash with defending Patriot League champion American in a battle for first place in the Patriot League. First-place American sits at 5-0 in the Patriot League while the Mountain Hawks are comfortably in second with a 6-1 record. The 7 p.m. contest will be aired for free on the Patriot League Network.
The Mountain Hawks, 12-8 overall, have won seven of their last eight games and are coming off a straight-set midweek win over non-league foe Fordham. Lehigh suffered its first Patriot League loss of the season last Saturday at Colgate as the Raiders rallied to win the final three sets on their way to a 3-2 victory. Friday night's match will mark the halfway point of Patriot League play for the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh leads the league in a number of statistical categories including opponent hitting percentage (.146), assists per set (11.92) and digs per set (17.18). Sophomore libero Mariah Brantley leads the league in digs per set with an individual average of 5.35, which is also good for 12th-best in Division I. Junior Amy Matula ranks second in the Patriot League with an assists per set average of 9.58. Matula had registered ten double-doubles so far this season.
Senior Jade Van Streepen leads Lehigh offensively with 173 kills, followed by junior Stephanie Slater with 158 and sophomore Morgan Lowe with 149. Junior Claire Bradshaw has tallied a team-best 21 service aces, while sophomore Taylor Carroll leads the way with 38 total blocks.
The Eagles, 14-4 overall, are on a ten-match winning streak and also lead the league in a number of statistical categories including hitting percentage (.254), kills per set (13.10) and service aces per set (1.70). Monika Smidova leads the league in service aces per set with an individual average of 0.41. American has picked up four 3-0 wins in league play so far this season, in addition to a close 3-2 win at Army last weekend.
Allison Cappellino leads American offensively with 195 kills, followed by Sarah Katz with 171 and Kelly McCaddin with 148. Cappellino also leads the team in digs with 217, while Kelly McCaddin has registered a team-best 66 total blocks.
Defending champ American has won the last four meetings between the two squads. The Eagles won 3-1 and 3-0 last season on their way to a NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. Lehigh trails 27-4 in the all-time series.
Following Friday's match, the Mountain Hawks will have a week until the second half of league play begins Friday Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. against rival Lafayette inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The match will be broadcast free of charge on the Patriot League Network.
