BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team rides a three-game unbeaten streak into Colgate Saturday for a 4 p.m. road showdown in the penultimate game of the regular season. The contest can be viewed for free on the Patriot League Network.
The Mountain Hawks (8-7-1, 3-3-1 Patriot League) are tied with Army for fourth place in the league and trail third-place American by 13 points. Army holds down sixth place with eight points, but Colgate, Holy Cross and Loyola aren't far behind with seven points. Lehigh can clinch a spot in the Patriot League tournament Saturday with a win over Colgate and a loss/tie by Holy Cross and Loyola.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 1-1 draw Wednesday night against defending league champion No. 23 Navy. Sophomore Gianfranco Giammatteo scored the first goal of the game in the 53rd minute before Navy evened the score just four minutes later. Lehigh senior keeper Ciaran Nugent made a career-high nine saves between the pipes as the Mountain Hawks snapped Navy's six-game winning streak. The draw against Navy came after an exciting 2-1 win over Army last Saturday.
Junior Jamie Luchini leads Lehigh offensively with 16 points behind five goals and six assists. Freshman Doyle Tuvesson follows with four goals and three assists, good for 11 points. A total of eight Mountain Hawks have scored goals this season. Nugent has spent all but two games between the pipes and has accumulated 54 saves to go along with a .750 save percentage and 1.24 GAA.
The Raiders (6-8-2, 2-4-1 Patriot League) enter Saturday's game in a three-way tie for seventh place in the league and will be looking to make a playoff push against the Mountain Hawks. Colgate can remain in contention for a spot in the Patriot League Tournament with a win/tie against Lehigh or losses by Army, Bucknell and Loyola.
The Raiders are coming off a 2-0 road loss to Boston University last Saturday. Colgate held BU without a shot on goal for more than 54 minutes and outshot the Terriers 8-7, but couldn't find the back of the net. The Raiders' two league wins have come at Lafayette (2-1 2OT) and Holy Cross (3-2) and Colgate has yet to win a league game on its Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Ethan Kulter, the Patriot League's leading scorer, leads the Raiders with 27 points behind 11 goals and five assists. All other Colgate players have combined to score seven goals. Ricky Brown has spent all the time in net this season and has made 59 saves to go along with a 1.31 GAA and .728 save percentage.
The Raiders have won the last two meetings, including a 2-0 victory last season. Colgate leads the all-time series 14-9-6.
