Mountain Hawks host Loyola and Navy this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team returns to the friendly confines of Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall Friday and Saturday to host Loyola and Navy in a pair of Patriot League contests. Friday's 7 p.m. contest against Loyola will be Lehigh's Dig Pink match as the Mountain Hawks will team up with the Side-Out Foundation to benefit breast cancer research and awareness. First serve in Saturday's contest against Navy is set for 4 p.m. Both matches can be viewed for free on the Patriot League Network.
All proceeds from Friday's Dig Pink match will be donated to the Side-Out Foundation, which was established in 2004 to unite volleyball players and coaches and have them work toward the common goal of furthering breast cancer awareness, education and patient services. Fans can help support the fight against breast cancer by making a donation in two ways. A flat donation can be made or fans can make a pledge for each dig recorded by the team at the match. Those wishing to participate can donate at the match, or online here.
The Mountain Hawks head into this weekend's matches in second place in the Patriot League with a 9-2 league record that is part of a 16-9 overall mark. Lehigh is coming off a pair of big road wins last weekend at Army and Holy Cross. After a close first-set loss, the Mountain Hawks rallied to win a 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-17) match at Army Friday night as Lehigh picked up its first win in West Point since Nov. 8, 2003. On Saturday, the Mountain Hawks battled to a tough 3-2 (20-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 15-10) win at Holy Cross to capture Lehigh's 14th-straight win over Holy Cross. Lehigh heads into this weekend's action with a four-match winning streak.
Junior setter Amy Matula was named the Patriot League Player of the Week following her strong play in Lehigh's two wins last weekend. Matula leads Lehigh with 828 assists and ranks second in the league in assists per set with an average of 9.63. Sophomore Mariah Brantley leads the Patriot League with a 5.36 digs per set average that also ranks 14th nationally. Senior Jade Van Streepen leads the Mountain Hawks with 212 kills, followed by junior Stephanie Slater with 202. Sophomore Taylor Carroll has stuffed a team-best 50 total blocks. As a team, the Mountain Hawks are hitting .205 while limiting their opponents to a .153 attack percentage.
Loyola will be searching for its first league win of the season Friday when the Greyhounds enter Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The team holds an 0-10 league record that is part of a 2-21 overall mark. The Greyhounds have had a week off from competition after dropping a 3-1 (25-27, 25-23, 25-11, 25-22) match to Navy last Friday. Loyola hit .333 in the opening set, but the Mids rallied to win the next three sets and keep the Greyhounds winless in league play.
Freshman Molly Cichosz leads Loyola and the Patriot League with a 3.30 kills per set average. Jane Lukas has tallied the most kills on the team with a total of 233. Lauren Anderson leads the team in assists with 365, while Micah Duzey has registered a team-best 247 digs. The Greyhounds are hitting .127 as a team compared to their opponents' .255 average.
The Mountain Hawks cruised to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-20) win in the first meeting of the season in Baltimore. Van Streepen led Lehigh with nine kills and an impressive .474 hitting percentage. Slater, freshman Whitney Krantz and sophomore Morgan Lowe followed with seven kills apiece. Lehigh leads the all-time series between the two teams 9-3 and has won the last seven matches.
Following Friday's Dig Pink match against Loyola, the Mountain Hawks will welcome Navy at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Mids (10-9 overall) are currently tied for third place in the Patriot League with Colgate, as both teams hold a 7-3 league record. Navy is on a three-match winning streak and has won five of its last six. The Mids picked up a straight-set (25-18, 25-14, 25-22) victory over Lafayette Sunday in the team's most recent match with the help of a strong service game from Sofia Luczak, Alli Graf and Rachel Fortner.
Katie Sylakowski leads Navy with 166 kills and a strong .302 hitting percentage. Star Steele has tallied a team-best 468 assists, while Alli Graf leads the Mids with 274 digs. As a team, Navy holds a .181 attack percentage compared to its opponents' mark of .178.
A strong team effort led the Mountain Hawks to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-21) win at Navy in the first meeting of the season as Lehigh secured a 5-0 start to Patriot League play for the first time in program history. Five Mountain Hawks tallied five or more kills in the match, as Slater led the way with eight and a strong .389 hitting percentage. Brantley registered a team-best 19 digs while the Mountain Hawks hit .280 as a team and limited Navy to just .085. The Mids lead the all-time series 28-23.
Following this weekend's contests, Lehigh remains home to host Colgate next Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Bucknell Saturday.
