BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team continued its dominant play Friday night inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace hall with a straight-set (25-23, 25-15, 25-19) win over Loyola. The Mountain Hawks move to 10-2 in league play and 17-9 overall with their fifth-straight win, while Loyola falls to 2-22 overall and 0-11 in the Patriot League.
"Our serving wasn't on point in the first set, which made the game a lot tougher," said head coach Bob Bertucci. "Our serving improved in the next two games, but we'll have to step it up a bit tomorrow for Navy."
Senior Jade Van Streepen tallied a team-best 12 kills. Junior Stephanie Slater recorded 11 kills and an impressive .421 hitting percentage. Junior Amy Matula registered her 14th double-double of the season with 11 digs and 38 assists, while sophomore Mariah Brantley posted a team-best 12 digs.
The first set started in a 5-5 tie before four unanswered points from Loyola gave the Greyhounds a 9-5 lead. The Mountain Hawks used kills from Slater, Van Streepen and junior Leah Turner to pull back within one at 13-12 and eventually tied the set at 17 thanks to a service ace from Matula. Loyola jumped ahead by two, but a Van Streepen spike knotted the score once again at 21. Two more kills from Van Streepen and a spike from sophomore Taylor Carroll helped Lehigh close out the set on a 4-2 run to claim a 25-23 victory and 1-0 match advantage.
The Mountain Hawks took a slim 6-5 lead early on in the second set before three Loyola errors and a kill from freshman Whitney Krantz helped Lehigh to a 10-6 advantage. The Mountain Hawks stayed ahead by at least three and slowly worked towards a commanding 25-15 set-two win to take a 2-0 match lead. The Mountain Hawks hit a match-high .484 in the second set.
The third set opened in a 6-6 tie, but a Loyola attack error sparked a 6-0 run Lehigh run that saw two kills from Turner as the Mountain Hawks jumped ahead 12-6. A service ace from Anna Eckstein pulled the Greyhounds within four at 15-11, but the Greyhounds were never able to pull closer as a kill from senior Kaylynn Genemaras capped off a 25-19 set-three win and 3-0 match victory.
Lehigh returns to action Saturday at 4 p.m. against Navy in Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall for an important Patriot League matchup. The match will be broadcast for free on the Patriot League Network.
