BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team continued its historic start to the Patriot League season with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-20) win over Bucknell Friday night inside Leeman-Turner Arena. The Mountain Hawks remain undefeated in Patriot League play and hold a 6-0 league record for the first time in program history. Lehigh has won six straight matches and eight of its last nine, including five-consecutive 3-0 wins. Bucknell falls to 2-11 overall and 1-4 in the Patriot League with the loss.
"We played very well offensively," said head coach Bob Bertucci. "We were hitting the ball well and we weren't making errors, which was the most important thing. We kept control in every situation."
Lehigh hit a season-best .412 as a team and limited Bucknell to just .065. Junior Stephanie Slater led the Mountain Hawks with 12 kills and a strong .385 hitting percentage, while senior Jade Van Streepen followed with seven kills and a .429 attack percentage. Junior Amy Matula notched a squad-best 26 assists while sophomore Mariah Brantley led the team with 13 digs.
"Steph Slater is causing other teams some trouble," offered Bertucci. "Jade is really starting to emerge as a leader on the court, which is what you'd expect out of one of your seniors. We also had a great game from Amy Matula because she really took control in the third set and calmed us down."
A pair of kills from Lowe got Lehigh out to a quick 3-0 start in the opening set and the Mountain Hawks eventually extended their lead to 8-4 as the Bison were forced to call their first timeout. Vrhel set down two kills out of the timeout to lengthen Lehigh's lead to 10-4. The Mountain Hawks took control at 17-10 to force Bucknell's second timeout and never looked back as a kill from sophomore Taylor Carroll eventually secured a 25-15 set one win and 1-0 match advantage.
The Mountain Hawks held a 4-2 lead in the second set before Lehigh went on a 4-0 run to capture an 8-2 advantage. Lehigh continued to roll and eventually led by 14 at 20-6. Bucknell wouldn't go down without a fight though, as the Bison were able to tally seven more points before a kill from sophomore Katie Jennison gave Lehigh a 25-13 set two win and 2-0 match advantage.
The third set was much closer than the previous two and started out in a 3-3 tie. A Claire Bradshaw service ace capped off a 6-3 Lehigh run to give the Mountain Hawks a 9-6 advantage before Bucknell rallied to knot the set at ten. After two more tie scores, a kill from Bucknell's Luz Nagle gave the Bison a 17-14 advantage and forced Lehigh to call a timeout. A pair of service aces and kills from Slater and junior Leah Turner allowed the Mountain Hawks to tie the score at 19. Lehigh closed the set on a 6-1 run as a Slater service ace secured a 25-20 set three win and straight-set match victory.
The Mountain Hawks return to action Saturday at 4 p.m. when Lehigh heads to Colgate. The match can be viewed free of charge on the Patriot League Network.
