Mountain Hawks host Lafayette Friday before traveling to NJIT Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team begins the second half of Patriot League play Friday when the Mountain Hawks host archrival Lafayette inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall before the team heads to NJIT for its final non-league match of the season Saturday at 4 p.m. Friday's match against the Leopards can be viewed for free on the Patriot League Network.
The Mountain Hawks currently sit in second place in the Patriot League with a 6-2 league mark and will be looking to bounce back from a pair of losses to Colgate and American. Lehigh is 3-0 in home Patriot League matches this season, with all wins coming by a score of 3-0. Friday's match against Lafayette marks the start of the second half of league play for the Mountain Hawks as Lehigh will get a second pass through the home-and-home format.
The Mountain Hawks lead the league in a number of statistical categories including opponent hitting percentage (.152), assists per set (11.81) and digs per set (16.90). Sophomore Mariah Brantley, who was recently named the ECAC Co-Libero of the Week, leads the league and ranks tenth in all of Division I in digs per set with an individual average of 5.40. Junior Amy Matula ranks third in the league in assists per set with an impressive mark of 9.49 and is just 43 assists away from a spot in the top five on Lehigh's all-time assists leaderboard. Junior Claire Bradshaw ranks second in the league in service aces per set with a mark of 0.40.
Senior Jade Van Streepen leads Lehigh with 176 kills, while junior Stephanie Slater (168) and sophomore Morgan Lowe (157) have also been key contributors for the Mountain Hawk offense. Sophomore Taylor Carroll leads the squad with 40 total blocks.
The Leopards are currently eighth in the Patriot League with a league record of 1-6 and overall mark of 4-15. Lafayette has lost its last four matches and its only league win came in the form of a 3-1 victory at Loyola. The Leopards are coming off a pair of tough 3-2 losses to Holy Cross and Army last weekend.
Jet Manzi leads Lafayette offensively with 157 kills, followed by Elizabeth Walsh with 117 and Danielle Towslee with 102. Tori Smith has tallied a team-best 357 assists, while Lauren Pisauro leads the squad with 297 digs. Kelly Flynn has stuffed a team-leading 47 total blocks.
Lehigh will be looking for its 11th-straight win over the Leopards Friday night after capturing a 3-1 (25-15, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22) win to open league play on Sept. 17. Lowe recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs, while senior Kaylynn Genemaras tallied ten kills in the season's first meeting. Matula also posted a double-double with 34 assists and 14 digs, while Brantley registered a team-best 19 digs. Junior Ana Vrhel notched four blocks to go along with six kills. Lehigh holds a 52-29 all-time advantage over Lafayette.
Following Friday's rivalry matchup, Lehigh hits the road to face NJIT on Saturday at 4 p.m. for the Mountain Hawks' final non-league contest of the season. The Highlanders carry a 6-16 record into Saturday's match and are coming off a straight-set loss to Army on Wednesday. Fran Edmondson leads NJIT with 192 kills, while Danica Vukotic (188), Nina Vukotic (176) and Valerie Carroll (132) have also tallied over 100 spikes. Alyssa Armada leads the team with 581 assists and Camilla Tinari has registered a squad-best 241 digs. As a team, NJIT averages a .151 hitting percentage while its opponents average a mark of .216.
The all-time series between Lehigh and NJIT is tied at two, but the Mountain Hawks won the most recent meeting by a score of 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-21) a season ago. Van Streepen led the way for Lehigh with 17 kills and a .406 hitting percentage and Matula tallied 26 assists and five sneaky kills.
Following this weekend's action, Lehigh remains on the road to face Army and Holy Cross on Oct. 24 and 25, respectively. The Mountain Hawks return home to face Loyola on Halloween night.
