Lehigh and Loyola play to scoreless tie in Baltimore

10/11/2014 9:57:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BALTIMORE - The Lehigh women's soccer team and Loyola played neck-and-neck for 90 minutes plus 20 minutes of overtime and in the end, neither team could find the back of the net in a 0-0 tie on Saturday evening. The Mountain Hawks finished with a 7-6 edge in shots with each team firing two shots on goal as Lehigh remains unbeaten in Patriot League play at 2-0-3 heading into next Saturday's showdown against Army at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

"The effort was very strong," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "Good intensity, good effort, but the execution wasn't as good as we would've liked. It can be challenging to adjust to the turf, but that's not an excuse. We had some balls in some good spots, but we didn't execute well enough in the final third. I'm a little disappointed in that. I felt like this was an opportunity to get three points. I'm not totally upset with a point on the road, but we felt like it was an opportunity to solidify our spot a little bit more."

The Greyhounds earned the first chance less than a minute into the game, but junior goalie Ani Nahapetian made the save. The Mountain Hawks responded with the next two shots, both in the fourth minute, but neither was on goal.

Lehigh's first shot on goal came in the 32nd minute from freshman Grace Correll, but Loyola keeper Colleen Folan made the stop. After more than 30 minutes, freshman Adrian Vitello tallied the next shot on goal in the 66th minute. The Greyhounds responded less than 10 minutes later, but Nahapetian made her second save of the evening.

No shots were taken the final 15:37 of regulation. Loyola tallied the only shot of the first overtime while Lehigh recorded the only shot of the second overtime period.

"Neither team was able to break the other down," said Lambinus. "Both defenses were solid, worked hard, but neither team was overly threatening. I thought we were better in the first half. We just didn't make that creative or unexpected play in the final third which would've created that chance."

The Greyhounds held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks while Nahapetian and Folan each finished with two saves apiece.

The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday (Oct. 18) at 7 p.m. when they host Army on Senior Night. Ashley Blanks, Darby Dustman, Jordan Goodwin, Danielle Salans and Darby Wiegand will all be honored prior to opening kickoff.

"We'll be happy to get back home," said Lambinus. "We feel a lot more comfortable on our home field. We play with a lot more confidence there. It's Senior Night. It's a great opportunity to honor our seniors. We expect great effort and great intensity. Hopefully we can work on some things to give ourselves different opportunities in the game. It should be a really good game."
