BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a hard-fought double overtime win at Colgate, the Lehigh men's basketball team returns home to host Patriot League newcomer Boston University on Sunday in a nationally-televised CBS Sports Network showdown. Opening tip is set for 1 p.m. Both squads enter with identical 8-6 overall records and 1-0 Patriot League marks after the Terriers defeated Holy Cross 70-60 in their first-ever Patriot League contest. The Mountain Hawks look to continue their home success, owning a 5-0 mark this season and winners of eight straight at home dating back to last season.
A back and forth game on Thursday saw the largest lead for either side (eight) come in the final minute of the second overtime. The largest lead in the second half was four points as Lehigh and Colgate continued to go back and forth. The game saw an incredible 14 ties and 17 lead changes.
Freshman Tim Kempton led the offense with a career-high 25 points and 13 rebounds for a second straight game. He now has four double-doubles in his last six games, averaging 16.3 points and 11 rebounds in that span. After not scoring in the first half, senior Mackey McKnight broke out with 11 in the second half and seven more in overtime to finish with 18. He added seven assists, five rebounds and five steals to tie a career-high (originally set last January vs. Colgate).
Sophomore Jesse Chuku reached double-figure points for a fourth straight game, finishing with 18 led by 4-of-9 from three-point range. He hit a clutch three in each overtime period to help Lehigh come home winners. Junior Corey Schaefer bounced back from a tough game by tying a career-high 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting.
Lehigh won its first Patriot League opener away from home since Jan. 10, 2007, a 71-61 victory at Navy. The Mountain Hawks had lost three straight league openers on the road. It marked the team's second straight Patriot League opening win after topping Holy Cross at home last season.
It was the first time in two seasons the Mountain Hawks went to overtime (Feb. 25, 2012 at Army, a 74-72 win) and first time since Feb. 14, 2009 that Lehigh went to double overtime. The Mountain Hawks lost that game, also at Army, 82-75. The Mountain Hawks defeated Colgate for the sixth time in their last seven tries, but just the second time in the last four games in Hamilton, N.Y.
Lehigh and Boston University have played only once in their history, coming back in the 1968-69 season, an 81-56 Terriers victory.
Formally of the America East, Boston University enters with an 8-6 record and 1-0 Patriot League mark coming off an 80-70 home victory over Holy Cross in its first-ever Patriot League game. The Terriers are led by Maurice Watson Jr. who averages 14.8 points and 6.1 assists per game. Dom Morris comes in at 12.3 points and 6.9 rebounds while D.J. Irving averages 11.9 and 3.2. The Terriers share two common wins as Lehigh: LIU Brooklyn and Quinnipiac. Boston University picked up a big win over Maryland of the ACC (the first Patriot League team to beat an ACC school since Lehigh beat Duke in the 2012 NCAA Tournament) and also hung tough against Harvard and George Washington. The Terriers advanced to the College Insider Tournament a season ago where they faced fellow Patriot League newcomer Loyola.
The Mountain Hawks remain home to host Army on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. shown locally on Service Electric 2 Sports and online through the Patriot League Network.
Tickets are available online, including a print-at-home option, or by calling the ticket office at 610-7LU-GAME (610-758-4263). Individual game tickets are only five dollars (in advance) and season tickets are also available.
