Lehigh begins second round of league play at Boston U Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following several tough losses, the Lehigh men's basketball has pulled out three straight close games and looks to make it four in a row when the Mountain Hawks head to Boston University to face the Terriers. Opening tipoff on Saturday is set for 1 p.m. in Agganis Arena. Lehigh begins the second round of Patriot League play after falling to the Terriers on Jan. 5. Preseason Player of the Year D.J. Irving knocked down a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining to hand the Mountain Hawks a tough 67-66 loss.

After beating Navy by two (in overtime) and Lafayette by three, the Mountain Hawks defeated Bucknell on Wednesday night, 66-63. Despite hitting just one of its first ten field goal attempts and knocking down just 41 percent from the free throw line (9-of-22), Lehigh hit 56 percent from three-point range (9-of-16) to beat the Bison for the fourth time in its last five games. It also snapped a three-game losing streak to Bucknell at home, giving Lehigh its first win over Bucknell in Stabler Arena since Feb. 24, 2010. The last eight Lehigh-Bucknell games have been decided by seven points or fewer.

Junior Stefan Cvrkalj helped carry the offense, knocking down all four of his second-half three-point attempts and finishing with 14 points for the second time in three games; he also had 14 points and was 4-for-4 from three-point range at Navy. Junior Corey Schaefer finished with a team-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 3-of-5 from three-point range. Schaefer added five assists and a block while not turning the ball over.

Sophomore Jesse Chuku was strong on both ends of the court, posting nine points, 10 rebounds, a career-high four assists and four blocks. Lehigh recorded a season-high nine blocks on the evening, the team's most blocks since it had 10 on Jan. 8, 2013 against Muhlenberg and most against a Division I team since Dec. 13, 2010 against Saint Francis (Pa.) (also 10). Senior Mackey McKnight had nine points, seven assists and six rebounds while freshman Tim Kempton posted 12 points and six rebounds in just 21 minutes, despite battling foul trouble. The Mountain Hawks beat the defending Patriot League Champions and picked up their second win over a 2013 NCAA Tournament team (also LIU Brooklyn). Lehigh has also won three straight games when trailing at the half.

Boston University enters with a 15-7 record and 8-1 in Patriot League play. The Terriers' average margin is only +2.1 on the season, winning their league games by 10, one, 23, 11, eight, 14, three and five (in overtime).

Maurice Watson Jr. leads the offense averaging 14.3 points and a league-leading 6.6 assists while shooting 51.2 percent from the field. Irving averages 12.1 points and 3.5 assists while Dom Morris comes in at 11.4 points and a team-leading 6.6 points. The Terriers are shooting 43.9 percent from the field and allowing opponents to shoot an identical 43.9. Boston University's biggest nonleague win came at ACC foe Maryland, becoming the first Patriot League team to beat an ACC squad since Lehigh beat Duke in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

The Jan. 5 meeting between Lehigh and Boston University marked the first time the two schools met since 1968-69. Boston U owns a 2-0 all-time lead, including an 81-56 win during the 1968-69 season.
