Lehigh seeks 2-0 start Sunday versus Monmouth

1/24/2014 6:04:00 PM | Men's Tennis

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team will host Monmouth Sunday in the Lewis Tennis Center. The match comes after a Mountain Hawk win over Drexel in the season opener on January 19.

After losing the doubles point in a tie-break in the No. 2 flight, Lehigh bounced back in singles, winning four of the six matches to earn the 4-3 victory over Drexel.

Sophomore Jeremy Kochman won the key match at No. 5 singles, winning in straight sets to earn the decisive fourth match point. Senior Mark Goldberg, junior Mitchell Petersen and freshman Tyler Hansen were the other singles winners for the Mountain Hawks. Goldberg and Petersen also won the No. 1 doubles match.

Monmouth lost its spring season opener to Columbia 6-1 January 13. Sophomore Jason Prezant earned the only victory for Monmouth with a three-set win at No. 6 singles. Junior Freddy Marcinkowski and freshman Christian Viera nearly shocked Columbia's No. 1 doubles team, but fell short 6-5 in a tiebreaker.

Lehigh has hosted Monmouth in each of the last nine years and has won all nine of those meetings, including 7-0 shutouts in each of the last two years.

The Mountain Hawks will host Monmouth Sunday at noon inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Following Sunday's match, Lehigh will continue its home stand against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday February 2.
