Lehigh edges Drexel 4-3 in season-opener Sunday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A straight set win from sophomore Jeremy Kochman at No. 5 singles broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Lehigh men's tennis team a 4-3 win over visiting Drexel in the Mountain Hawks' season opener Sunday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Lehigh lost the doubles point in a tiebreak at No. 2 doubles but rallied to win four singles matches to extend their home winning streak to 14 straight.
In doubles play Lehigh's top team of senior Mark Goldberg and junior Mitchell Petersen started things off with a 6-0 win over Skyler Davis and Daniel Koehler. Drexel won at No. 3 doubles 6-1 as Badr Ouabdelmoumen and Dan Hansen beat Lehigh freshmen Ethan Bogard and Jason Sutker. The first point came down to the No. 2 flight where Xabier Saavedra and Alex Fioravante defeated Kochman and junior Ben Gilman 7-5 in the tiebreak to win 6-5 and give the Dragons an early 1-0 lead.
Goldberg and Petersen got Lehigh back on track early in singles play with straight set victories. Goldberg won 6-2, 6-4 over Davis at No. 2 singles and Petersen downed Fioravante 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 flight. Ouabdelmoumen won the top flight for Drexel, beating Gilman in straight sets after winning a second set tiebreak 11-9.
Freshman Tyler Hansen picked up his first collegiate victory, rallying from a set down to defeat Saavedra in three sets at No. 4 singles to give Lehigh its third point. Drexel won at No. 6 singles as Paul Stauskas beat senior Timur Chernkyh in straight sets.
The match came down to Kochman and Koehler at No. 5 singles. Kochman won the first set in a tiebreak and then took the second 6-3 to clinch the win for the Mountain Hawks in their season opener.
The Mountain Hawks will host Monmouth Sunday at noon inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
