BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off yet another down-to-the-wire game, the Lehigh men's basketball team looks to bounce back from a couple tough defeats when it heads to Loyola on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. One of two new Patriot League members this season, the Greyhounds began the season 4-0, but have lost eight of their last 10 and own an identical 1-2 league record as the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh continued with its balanced scoring attack against Army as five Mountain Hawks scored double-figure points for the second time this season. Senior Mackey McKnight scored a team-high 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting and a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Junior Corey Schaefer added 13, including three big second-half threes. Freshman Tim Kempton bounced back from a tough game against Boston University by scoring 12 points and adding seven rebounds. Freshman Austin Price added 11 points while sophomore Justin Goldsborough tied a career high with 11 points while setting a season-high seven rebounds.
Lehigh dropped its second straight home game for the first time since the 2010-11 season when the Mountain Hawks fell to Army on Jan. 15 (75-72) and Bucknell on Jan. 26 (81-68). Seventh-year head coach Brett Reed owns a 71-23 career record at home.
The Mountain Hawks have played four straight tight games. On Dec. 30, Bryant broke a tie with the go-ahead layup with two seconds remaining, then a McKnight three at the buzzer would have won it, but didn't fall through. One game later, McKnight followed with a game-tying three with just 27 seconds left at Colgate as Lehigh went on to win in double overtime. McKnight nearly led the Mountain Hawks past Boston University on Sunday, but two free throws with two seconds to go gave the Terriers a one-point victory. Then on Wednesday, Lehigh and Army played neck-and-neck. The Mountain Hawks fought back from seven down with just over a minute remaining to pull within one possession, but a McKnight three at the buzzer fell short.
Saturday marks the first game between Lehigh and Loyola in more than 15 years as the new league rivals will become very familiar with each other, facing each other at least twice per season.
The Mountain Hawks lead the all-time series, 5-4, but the teams haven't played since Nov. 26, 1988, an 86-72 Lehigh victory. The sides first played in 1912-13, a 41-19 Lehigh win. Loyola's first win came in 1915-16 by a 35-15 final. The last time Lehigh played at Loyola was on Dec. 9, 1978, a 65-56 Greyhounds victory.
After beginning the season 4-0, Loyola has struggled as of late, dropping eight of its last 10 games. The Greyhounds are 1-2 in Patriot League play, owning a home win against Navy and falling at Army and American. Dylon Cormier leads the team (and league) in scoring, averaging 22.3 points per game and a team-leading 5.9 rebounds. Eric Laster averages 9.5 points, Jarred Jones 8.5 and R.J. Williams 7.8. Three others average between 4.9 and 5.7 points. The Greyhounds allow opponents to shoot 46.1 percent from the field and 37.8 percent from three-point range. The Greyhounds average 9.4 steals per game, forcing 15.1 turnovers per contest. Loyola made the College Insider Tournament a season ago, facing fellow Patriot League newcomer Boston University.
The Mountain Hawks return home on Wednesday to host American at 7 p.m. before playing at Holy Cross on Saturday, Jan. 18.
Tickets are available online, including a print-at-home option, or by calling the ticket office at 610-7LU-GAME (610-758-4263). Individual game tickets are only five dollars (in advance) and season tickets are also available.
