Mountain Hawks finish up at fall-opening Penn Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh men's tennis team opened up its fall season at the three-day Penn Invitational, which wrapped up Sunday afternoon. There was no team scoring on the weekend as the Mountain Hawks battled a tough Brown squad Friday, Saint Joseph's on Saturday and Norfolk State on Sunday.
The Mountain Hawks enjoyed the most success against Saint Joseph's, winning two of three doubles matches and splitting six singles matches against the Hawks. Lehigh also split six singles matches against Norfolk State, but the Spartans swept all three doubles matches. The Mountain Hawks won a set in two separate singles matches against Brown, but the Bears swept four doubles matches and seven singles matches.
Freshman Tyler Hansen was the lone Mountain Hawk to win multiple singles matches on the weekend, downing Jason Sisti of Saint Joseph's 6-4, 6-3 at the fifth flight on Saturday and Samuel Lemberger of Norfolk State in three sets at the fourth flight on Sunday.
Junior Ben Gilman manned the top flight, posting a win against Saint Joseph's, while sophomore Jeremy Kochman played at the second flight with a win over Norfolk State. Senior Mark Goldberg played at the third singles flight over the first two days and notched a straight set win over Paranjay Malhotra of Saint Joseph's.
Freshman Colin Nardella posted Lehigh's other singles win at the sixth flight versus Norfolk State.
In doubles action, Goldberg and junior Mitchell Petersen manned the top flight and posted a win against Saint Joseph's, while Gilman and Kotchman were the No. 2 pairing. Lehigh shuffled its third flight pairings throughout the weekend with Nardella and freshman Ethan Bogard winning a match 6-1 over a team from Saint Joseph's.
The Mountain Hawks will host the first of two fall invitational events next weekend on the Goodman Campus.
