Mountain Hawks have strong showing at Lehigh Fall Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team put forth a strong showing as the Mountain Hawks hosted the first of two Lehigh Fall Invitational events Saturday and Sunday on the Goodman Campus. While there was no team scoring on the weekend, Lehigh players went 5-3 in doubles action and posted an impressive 16-5 record in singles matches.
Lehigh opened the weekend Saturday by taking on Delaware in singles and doubles action. The Mountain Hawks and Blue Hens split four doubles matches, with junior Ben Gilman and sophomore Jeremy Kochman teaming for a win at the second flight and freshmen Colin Nardella and Ethan Bogard combining to win at the third flight.
In singles play, the Mountain Hawks won five of eight matches against the Blue Hens. Gilman defeated Adam Lawton in a third set ten point tiebreak at the top flight. Kochman, junior Mitchell Petersen and senior Timur Chernykh were all straight set winners against Delaware while freshman Jason Sutker won in a third set tiebreak.
The Mountain Hawks then played doubles matches against Temple and Bucknell. Lehigh's top doubles team of Petersen and senior Mark Goldberg and a team of Gilman and sophomore Ricardo Prince posted wins against the Owls, while Nardella and Bogard teamed for their second win of the day against a Bucknell team.
Sunday's action saw Lehigh win four of six singles matches against Drexel before sweeping seven singles matches from Loyola to close out the weekend. Three of Lehigh's four wins against Drexel came from freshmen as Tyler Hansen, Sutker and Nardella joined Petersen with wins against the Dragons. Lehigh's sweep of Loyola included straight set wins from Gilman, Petersen, Hansen, Chernykh, Sutker and Nardella plus a third set super tiebreak win by Prince.
The Mountain Hawks will host a second Lehigh Fall Invitational October 26-27 on the Goodman Campus. Goldberg, Gilman and Petersen will return to action at the ITA Regionals in New Haven, Conn., beginning October 17.
