NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Three members of the Lehigh men's tennis team competed at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships, which began Thursday at Yale's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks were represented by senior Mark Goldberg and juniors Ben Gilman and Mitchell Petersen, with Goldberg and Petersen posting singles victories on the weekend.
Lehigh came into the weekend hoping to match the success of last year's ITA Regionals, where Gilman became the first Mountain Hawk to win a match in the championship bracket main draw.
This year, it was Goldberg who was placed in the main draw and thus did not have to play qualifying matches. Goldberg delivered Lehigh's second championship bracket win in as many years, downing Justin Pagan of Sacred Heart 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 on Friday. In his second round match on Saturday, Goldberg was ousted in straight sets by Sid Hazarika of Binghamton.
Despite being placed in the main draw last year, Gilman and Petersen were both forced to qualify for this year's main draw. Gilman dropped a three set match to Alex Hagermoser of Yale, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. Petersen won his first qualifying match, downing Jesse Frieder of Boston University 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, but he was eliminated in the second round of qualifying by Columbia's Shawn Hadavi in straight sets.
Goldberg and Petersen represented the Mountain Hawks in the doubles draw but dropped their first match 8-1 to Brendan Tannenbaum and Cameron Ghorbani of Dartmouth. Last year, Petersen and Gilman lost their first round match to a team from Dartmouth that included Ghorbani.
The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up their fall season this weekend when they host their second Lehigh Fall Invitational beginning Friday evening on the Goodman Campus.
