BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team returns home to host the first of two fall invitational events on the Goodman Campus beginning Saturday morning. The Mountain Hawks will welcome Delaware, Drexel, Loyola and a mixed team of four players apiece from Bucknell and Temple over two days of competition.
The invitational is designed so that each team can get a number of singles and double matches played simultaneously. There will be no team scoring.
Lehigh opened its fall season last weekend at the Penn Invitational, where the Mountain Hawks played singles and doubles matches against Brown, Saint Joseph's and Norfolk State. The defending Patriot League champions enjoyed the most success against Saint Joseph's, winning two doubles matches and three singles matches. The Mountain Hawks also split singles matches against Norfolk State but the Spartans swept three doubles matches.
Individually, freshman Tyler Hansen was the only Mountain Hawk to post multiple singles victories. Senior Mark Goldberg, junior Ben Gilman, sophomore Jeremy Kochman and freshman Colin Nardella each posted a singles victory. Goldberg and junior Mitchell Petersen accounted for one of Lehigh's two doubles wins, with freshman Ethan Bogard teaming with Nardella for the other.
The Mountain Hawks initial schedule for the Lehigh Fall Invitational features doubles matches against Delaware, Saturday at 10:30 a.m. followed by singles matches against the Blue Hens at 12:30 p.m. Lehigh will then face the mixed Bucknell/Temple team in singles at 5 p.m. The Sunday schedule remains to be determined.
Following this weekend Goldberg, Gilman and Petersen will head to New Haven, Conn. in two weeks to compete in the ITA Regional tournament at Yale. After that the Mountain Hawks will host another Lehigh Invitational to close out the fall season October 26-27.
