2013-14 Track and Field Schedules
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh track and field head coach Matt Utesch announced the Mountain Hawks' 2013-14 schedule on Thursday. The schedule is highlighted by five home events that will take place in Rauch Fieldhouse and the Goodman Campus Track.
The teams will begin their indoor season on December 6-7 when they host the Fast Times Before Finals meet in Rauch Fieldhouse. Utesch says the meet is a great starting point for his teams.
"It's a great opportunity for our kids to get their feet wet," Utesch said. "They've been training from September until December without any competition, which can become monotonous. It's great for them to be able to see where they're at before they head home for the winter holiday."
After a break for finals and the winter holidays, the men and women will begin competing again on January 11 at the Navy Invitational. Utesch says that away meets can help the teams deal with adversity, since every place they travel to is not always as nice as their home track.
"If there's a place that's better than ours it's definitely Navy," said Utesch. "The hydraulically banked track there is awesome so it's always great competition at Navy."
Following the meet in Annapolis, the Mountain Hawks will return home to host the Angry Birds Invitational on January 11, which serves as a competitive early season meet.
"The Angry Birds meet is a great early season meet because of the very solid competition across the board from solid complete teams," said Utesch. "When we get into that kind of competition, every event is a good event. Our athletes are going to get in a good, fast section in an early meet."
The Mountain Hawks will remain home the following weekend to host the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual. Besides the excitement of the rivalry, the coaching staff feels that the dual meet provides a good learning experience for the student-athletes.
"The Lehigh-Lafayette meet is always a great meet to prepare us to act like a team," said Utesch. "We ask kids to do things at that meet that may not be their specialty, but they do it for the team. That's the kind of thing you have to do at the Patriot League Championships when you're trying to score points wherever you can."
Lehigh will then travel to the New York City Armory to compete in the New Balance Invitational on February 1.
"The Armory in New York City is billed as the fastest track in the world," said Utesch. "It's crowded and busy there so all of that adversity helps us learn to concentrate at whatever meet we're at."
The Mountain Hawks will then return home to host the John Covert Classic on February 2. Two weeks later, the team will travel to Bucknell to compete in the Patriot League Championships. Boston University will host the ECAC/IC4A Championships from February 28-March 3 to conclude the indoor season.
The outdoor season will begin with a trip to the Philadelphia Classic on March 22. The season will consist of eight away meets and one home meet, including trips to the Winthrop Invite, Raleigh Relays, Bucknell Bison Classic and Penn Relays. The Mountain Hawks will also host the Lehigh Games on April 25-26.
"Traveling is always educational for our team, no matter where we're going," said Utesch. "The spring time is very busy with different trips, but all of them will help our athletes gain experience for the championship meets at the end of the season."
The outdoor Patriot League Championships will be held on May 2-3 at Navy, while the ECAC/IC4A Championships will take place at Princeton on May 9-10. The first round of NCAA Championships will take place on May 23-24 in Tallahassee, Fla.
