Lehigh-Lafayette Rivalry
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's cross country team will aim to grab its 15th straight victory over Lafayette on Saturday when it heads to Easton to take on the Leopards. The annual dual meet is set to start at 10 a.m.
"To us, the rivalry means competition at its purest," said head coach Todd Etters. "We're one of the lucky few colleges that gets to line up every year where it's all about what you can do that day. It's head-to-head competition at its best."
Last year the Mountain Hawks won the dual meet 16-47. Mountain Hawk senior Tyler Mueller finished the race in first place with a time of 24:54. Including the top finisher, Lehigh also placed nine of the top ten runners. Senior Sam Bernitt (25:02) and junior Ryan Mahalsky (25:06) finished in second and third place, respectively. The five other returning Lehigh runners that finished in the top ten included senior Jimmy Miller (25:31), junior Casey Gilboy (25:35), junior Nick Ward (25:46), senior Nick Molloy (25:55) and senior Russell Vignali (25:58).
The Mountain Hawks are coming off an impressive performance at the 2013 Lehigh Invitational. Lehigh placed first out of 14 teams with a total of 29 team points. Mahalsky finished the race in first place with a time of 18:46. Two other Lehigh runners finished in the top five, while a total of eight Mountain Hawks concluded the race in the top twenty.
Lafayette finished eighth in this year's Lehigh Invitational. The Leopards' top finisher was Thomas Day (19:50) who came in 24th place. Day was one of only two Lafayette runners to finish in the top 50.
This will be the second meet of the season for both Lehigh and Lafayette. The dual meet will serve as a course preview for Patriot League Championships. The league championship race will be run on Lafayette's course on November 2.
"We're lucky in that we get to see the course before some of the other Patriot League schools," said Etters. "We'll know what stretches will hurt really badly and we'll know what parts we can really crank. It's definitely an advantage and we'll be looking out for stuff like that."
Following the Lehigh-Lafayette dual on Saturday, the Mountain Hawks will return to action when they host the 40th annual Paul Short Run, presented by Asics and Schuylkill Valley Sports. The competition will feature a full day of collegiate and high school races beginning at 10 a.m. on October 5.
