EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh men's cross country team grabbed its 15th straight victory over rival Lafayette on Saturday at the annual Lehigh-Lafayette 8k dual meet. Mountain Hawks senior Tyler Mueller raced his way to a first place finish with a time of 25:23.10, while Lehigh runners made up every finish in the top 11 to give the Mountain Hawks the 15-50 victory.
"Our guys really pulled it together in the second half of the race," said head coach Todd Etters. "It was good to get the win, but I also saw some points that we can work on going into the next race."
Mueller grabbed his third collegiate win at Saturday's dual meet, after having won last year's dual meet as well as the 2012 Lehigh Invitational. Saturday's dual meet served as the senior's first race this season. Junior Ryan Mahalsky followed right behind in second place with a time of 25:32.60. Sophomore Sean Burke (26:56.40), junior Casey Gilboy (26:56.90), and junior Nick Ward (27:02.80) rounded out the top five finishers.
"Tyler and Ryan did great, and it wasn't really a surprise to see them up front," said Etters. "I wouldn't be surprised to see them continue to show that they are All-Patriot league contenders. It was great to see Tyler do so well in his first race this season."
Freshman Alex Fitzgerald (27:03.90) continued to impress with a sixth place finish, while freshman Ryan Cooney (27:04.90) followed right behind in seventh place. Senior Ryan Knouse (27:05.20), sophomore Evan Ward (27:09.40), sophomore Daniel Reilly (27:10.40) and senior Russell Vignali (27:12.50) finished seventh through eleventh, respectively.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action when they host the 40th annual Paul Short Run, presented by Asics and Schuylkill Valley Sports. The competition will feature a full day of collegiate and high school races beginning at 10 a.m. on October 5.
