Lehigh women's golf hands out postseason team awards

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After winning the inaugural Patriot League women's golf championship in April, the Lehigh women's golf team honored its two senior captains with team awards following the conclusion of the 2013 spring season. Senior Chelsea Michalek was named Outstanding Athlete and Scholar-Athlete while classmate Ginette Schapira took home the Coaches Award.
The Mountain Hawks finished in the top half of the field in four tournaments in 2012-13, highlighted by their win in Lewisburg, Pa. April 20-21.
Michalek was named the first Patriot League Outstanding Golfer of the Year in women's golf, after earning individual medalist honors with a five stroke victory at the league championship. The Glenview, Ill. native was also a first team All-League selection and the league's Female Golfer of the Month for April. Michalek also excelled in the classroom, as she was named to the Academic All-Patriot League team with a 3.39 grade point average in marketing. She is also a Dean's List student and received Lehigh Athletics' Distinguished Achievement Award at Lehigh's annual honors convocation in late April.
Schapira received the Coaches Award, which is given to the individual who made significant contributions to the well-being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership. A native of Montevideo, Uruguay, Schapira tied for third at the Patriot League Championship. She was named a first-team All-Patriot League on the course, and for her work in the classroom was the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's golf.
The finance major graduated with an impressive 3.96 cumulative GPA. She has made the Dean's List in each of her first seven semesters at Lehigh, including four semesters where she registered a perfect 4.0 GPA. Schapira was also named an Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar in 2012. She posted a stroke average of 80.3 in her senior season, third lowest on the team and led the Mountain Hawks at the Yale and Rutgers Invitational tournaments in the fall.
The Mountain Hawks lose three seniors to graduation with Natalie Lansing joining Michalek and Schapira. Lehigh returns two All-Patriot League selections plus Patriot League Rookie of the Year Nicole Feierberg in 2013-14.
