BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After day one of the Patriot League Championships and six scored events, the Lehigh women's and men's track and field team stand in second and fourth place with 43 and 12 points respectively. A single point separates the Lehigh women from Bucknell, while Navy leads the Bison by one point for the top spot on the men's side.
“What the team has done in practice has become habit,” Lehigh head coach Matt Utesch said. “We've been pushing them to peak and now they have.”
Outside of the heptathlon, Wardle also set a personal record in the javelin with a 40.22 meter throw.
Junior Ryan Paquin is fewer than 100 points ahead of Lafayette's Chris Castello for the top spot in the decathlon after five events. Paquin took first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.60 seconds before registering a distance of 6.84 meters to win the long jump. He also represented Lehigh in the long jump prior to his performance in the event as part of the decathlon.
“In the decathlon you always have some good events and bad events, and as long as you know you can have more good performances than bad ones you can do pretty well,” Paquin said.
Junior Jimil Ataman and senior E'Lana Lemon continued to dominate the hammer throw, finishing one-two in the event with marks of 55.50 meters and 55.47 meters, respectively.
“We were really able to set the tone for our whole team to do well,” Lemon said. “We want to do well individually, but we know we each have to get the points for our team in order to get the league trophy.”
Sophomore Serenah Polite took home a silver medal in the women's long jump with 5.52 meter leap, while Astor finished in fifth with a score of 5.46 meters. The Brown and White's 4x800 meter relay team of senior Kathleen Ryan, senior Lauren Pietrosh, senior Julia Perry and junior Jessica Kendzor finished in second place after clocking in at 8:55.54.
Lehigh had three long distance runners in the 10,000 meter run, with senior captain Victoria Berard coming in fourth with a time of 37:30.75. Junior Marissa Galante and freshman Arielle Weiner also participated in the event for the Mountain Hawks.
In the field events, freshman Beau Whitman finished in the top five in the pole vault after clearing a height of 4.50 meters. Sophomore Benjamin Beauchamp and senior Chris Buck represented Lehigh in the hammer throw, while freshman Christopher Foley participated in the javelin.
Day two of the Patriot League Championships begins with the remaining events in the decathlon and heptathlon, which are scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday.
