Lucas receives two LVAIAW awards Tuesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh senior catcher Liz Lucas was recognized for her stellar career Tuesday at the annual LVAIAW (Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) awards luncheon at Starters Restaurant. Lucas was recognized as the outstanding softball student-athlete among Lehigh Valley colleges and universities and was also named the Outstanding Athlete at Lehigh.
Lucas entered her senior season as a two-time All-Patriot League selection, a 2011 ECAC All-Star and a 2012 NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region selection. The starting catcher on Lehigh's back-to-back Patriot League championship teams, Lucas was named the league's preseason Player of the Year back in February.This season, Lucas is batting .307 with three home runs, 39 runs batted in, and a league-leading 16 doubles. The durable Lucas, who has started all 215 of Lehigh's games in her career, is a career .334 hitter. Earlier this season, she became Lehigh's career leader in home runs with 25. With 164 runs batted in she is one shy of the Lehigh and Patriot League career record. She also has 62 doubles, two off the school and league career marks. Lucas' best statistical season was her 2011 sophomore campaign, where she batted .380 with 21 doubles, ten home runs and 48 runs batted in. She capped that season by hitting three home runs in Lehigh's Patriot League championship-clinching win at Colgate.
Earlier this week, Lucas captured three awards at Lehigh's annual end-of-year Athletics Convocation Program. Lucas was named Lehigh's Graduating Female Athlete of the Year and won the Marlene “Linny” Fowler Service Award, for her community service work off the diamond. She also was one of 11 student-athletes to earn the Distinguished Achievement Award. Recipients are student-athletes who have displayed a high level of scholarship, significant athletic achievement at the league level and beyond and demonstrated service to the institution. In addition to her on field exploits and her many service initiatives Lucas carries a 3.11 cumulative grade point average as an Earth and Environmental Science major.
Lucas and the Mountain Hawks will host the Patriot League Tournament at Kaufman Field May 9-11. Lehigh will open the tournament against Colgate on Thursday May 9.
