WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Lehigh baseball team fell into an early hole and couldn't recover as UNC-Wilmington topped the Mountain Hawks in their season opener, 15-0 Friday afternoon. Four Mountain Hawks posted a hit while freshman Kevin Long was strong out of the bullpen, allowing just one run over three innings. Lehigh will return to action on Saturday in Game Two of a three-game series against the Seahawks.

"UNC-Wilmington is an outstanding opponent and they simply outplayed us in every facet of the game today," said Lehigh head coach Sean Leary. "It may have been our first day outside this spring, but that was not the deciding factor. I give the credit 100 percent to a quality team that executed at a high level all game. I'm confident our guys will come to the ballpark ready to play hard tomorrow."
UNC-Wilmington is coming off a stellar season which saw it win the CAA and advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Seahawks got five hits in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. They added two more in the second and three in the third, which proved too much for the Mountain Hawks to overcome.
Senior Casey Turner and freshman Mike Garzillo each had a double for Lehigh while sophomore John Elson and junior Joe Abeln added a hit as well. The Mountain Hawks got two on board in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't break the shutout.
Long came in during the middle innings to stem the tide, allowing just two hits and one run in three innings while striking out three.
The Mountain Hawks will round out their weekend with a single game both Saturday and Sunday. First pitch on Saturday is slated for 2 p.m.
