BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball team resumes action Monday when they return home to the friendly confines of Stabler Arena to face Saint Peter's in a 5 p.m. game. The Lehigh men's basketball team will take to the hardwood immediately following the women's game to face LIU Brooklyn at 7:30 p.m.
Monday's game will be the first in nearly two weeks for the Mountain Hawks, with their last action at Ohio State on Nov. 27. The Big Ten Buckeyes were too much as Lehigh fell 93-63 in Columbus in its first road loss of the season.
Lehigh stayed close in the first half, and even led 24-21, but the Buckeyes' hot shooting was too much for the Mountain Hawks to overcome in the second half. Lehigh finished the game with a 27.9 percent (17-for-61) field goal percentage and shot 34.8 percent (8-for-23) from the three-point line. Ohio State was hot from the field, finishing the game at 50 percent (33-for-66).
Three Lehigh players scored in double-figures, led by junior Sarah Williams with 14 points. Sophomore Kerry Kinek followed with 12 and junior Katie O'Reilly with 11. Kinek and sophomore Elizabeth Sharlow each grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds.
Saint Peter's will be searching for its first win of the season when the Peacocks come to Bethlehem Monday. Saint Peter's is currently 0-6 and coming off its largest loss of the season on Wednesday, when the Peacocks dropped a 77-47 decision to Stony Brook at home on Wednesday.
The Seawolves led the Peacocks for the majority of the game and were able to cruise to the dominating 30-point victory. Despite the loss, Peacock senior Aziza May scored a season-high 13 points in the contest to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Antonia Smith and Hala Mostafa registered eight points apiece in the Peacock loss.
Smith has led the Peacocks all season, averaging 14.3 points per game. Kaydine Bent holds a team-leading average of 5.8 rebounds per game. The Peacocks are averaging 54.2 points, 31.8 rebounds and 17.5 turnovers per game.
The Mountain Hawks aim to remain unbeaten against the Peacocks in Monday's game. Lehigh holds a 3-0 advantage in the short history between the two squads, which began in 2010.
The Mountain Hawks claimed a close 62-60 victory in the most recent meeting between the teams last season. Led by a career-high 17 points and eight rebounds from Lindsay Hoskins, Lehigh pulled out its first win of the season on Nov. 14, 2012. Lehigh took its first lead of the game early in the second half, going up by as many as six before holding on for the hard-fought road victory.
Sophomore Sarah Williams added 10 points, eight of which came in the first half. Williams hit a big three-pointer as time expired in the first to pull Lehigh even at 28. The Mountain Hawks had trailed the entire first half, but the Williams trey sparked Lehigh into the second as it scored the first five points to extend its overall run to 11-0. The Mountain Hawks did not trail for the game's final 11:31.
Following Monday's game, the Mountain Hawks will have another lengthy break for final exams. Lehigh will resume action on Dec. 20-21 when it hosts the Christmas City Classic. Tickets can be purchased by calling 610-7LU-GAME or by visiting LehighTickets.com.
