BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Riding a four-game winning streak, the Lehigh men's basketball returns from an 11-day hiatus to host Quinnipiac on Saturday in Stabler Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. following a pair of women's games at 2 and 4:30 p.m. as part of the Christmas City Classic. The Mountain Hawks have won five of their last six games to move over .500 on the season at 6-5. Sophomore Jesse Chuku and freshman Tim Kempton are both coming off double-doubles in last Monday's 76-69 win over three-time defending NEC Champion LIU Brooklyn.
Saturday marks the 200th career game for seventh-year head coach Brett Reed. Lehigh also enters with 999 wins in program history, looking to reach the 1,000 win plateau. Saturday's game will follow a pair of women's games (at 2 and 4:30 p.m.) as part of the Christmas City Classic hosted by the Lehigh women's team.
A balanced effort saw four Mountain Hawks reach double-figure points, led by 15 from Chuku, 13 from freshmen Kempton and Austin Price and 10 from senior Mackey McKnight. Chuku and Kempton each had 10 rebounds, including seven in the second half. Kempton earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors while Chuku received honorable mention recognition.
Freshman Shane Whitfield scored all nine of his points in the second half, finishing 3-of-4 from the field while adding three rebounds and two assists. McKnight added eight points and seven assists; he's averaging nine assists at home this season. He enters Saturday with 451 assists in his career, needing just two from passing Scott Layer for second in school history.
Kempton now has 44 points and 33 rebounds over his last three games and has posted double-figure points in nine of the last 10 contests. Last Monday's double-doubles marked the second in each of Chuku's and Kempton's respective careers and the second time in four home games that Lehigh has posted two double-doubles.
Lehigh led for all but 43 seconds, beating an LIU Brooklyn team that's made three straight NCAA Tournaments after winning consecutive NEC Championships. It marked the sixth time this season Lehigh has allowed fewer than 70 points and the Mountain Hawks are 5-0 in those games. The Blackbirds marked the fourth reigning NCAA Tournament team that the Mountain Hawks face, following Minnesota, Pittsburgh and South Dakota State. Lehigh will also face Bucknell twice in league play.
The Mountain Hawks are vying for their fifth straight win which would tie their longest winning streak since winning five straight last Jan. 8 through Jan. 23, beginning with a home win over Muhlenberg and including league victories over Holy Cross, American, Colgate and Bucknell. Lehigh is also searching for its eighth straight home game dating back to last season.
Quinnipiac enters with a 6-3 record and 1-1 in MAAC play, most recently winning at Vermont by an 80-67 final. Four Bobcats average double-figure points while three average 7.8 rebounds per game (or more). Ike Azotam leads the way in both points (16.0) and rebounds (11.0), Zaid Hearst comes in at 15.1 points and 9.6 rebounds while Ousmane Drame averages 12.7 points and 7.8 boards. The Bobcats are +13.6 in rebounding margin, good for third in the nation (as of Monday). Quinnipiac is averaging 78.7 points per game, highlighted by 102 in a dominant 39-point win at Maine.
Lehigh has won the last two meetings to tie the all-time series at three. The Mountain Hawks won last year's meeting 77-66. With Lehigh down 62-61, C.J. McCollum scored 14 straight points to help the Mountain Hawks pull away for their first-ever road win at Quinnipiac. The sides first met on Nov. 22, 2006, a 71-55 Quinnipiac victory.
Following the holiday, Lehigh will head to Bryant to face the Bulldogs on Monday, Dec. 30. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
