BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a long five-game road swing, the Lehigh men's basketball team returns home to host Sacred Heart on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a win and loss in South Dakota to round out the Progressive Legends Classic. Sunday marks the beginning of four-of-five games at home.
Senior Mackey McKnight led the way last time out, scoring 21 points at South Dakota State to earn All-Tournament team honors. He also had nine points and four assists in a win over Texas Southern. McKnight eclipsed 1,000 career points against the host Jackrabbits as a jumper with 10:38 remaining in the second half gave him the milestone. He became the 32nd player in school history and sixth player in as many seasons to reach 1,000 (Marquis Hall in 2008-09, Zahir Carrington in 2009-10, C.J. McCollum in 2010-11, Gabe Knutson in 2011-12 and Holden Greiner in 2012-13).
Down 15 early in the second half, Lehigh used a 12-0 run to pull within three. However, the Mountain Hawks couldn't pull any closer and South Dakota State pulled away for a 74-61 win.
Freshman Austin Price added nine points behind 3-of-6 from three-point range. Classmate Tim Kempton grabbed eight rebounds for a second straight game while scoring five points as well. Sophomore Jesse Chuku had a strong all-around game with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting, four rebounds and two blocks.
The Mountain Hawks enter Sunday with a 2-5 record, but the two wins are against quality teams Rider (who won 19 games last season) and Texas Southern (who went 16-2 in the SWAC last year and was predicted to win the conference this season). Several of Lehigh's five losses were close defeats against strong foes like Houston, Fordham and South Dakota State.
The Mountain Hawks posted 10 steals at South Dakota State, the first time they reached double figures since having 12 against Navy last Feb. 27. Meanwhile, McKnight had two assists to move to 421 for his career, within five of tying Mike Polaha for fourth place in school history.
Lehigh is looking to beat a member of the NEC for the 12th time in its last 13 tries (dating back to 2010). The Mountain Hawks are eying their third straight win over Sacred Heart and fifth straight home victory dating back to last season.
The Mountain Hawks have played nine of the 10 NEC teams (all except Mount St. Mary's), owning a 27-29 record all-time against the conference. Lehigh has played Wagner the most (19 times) while owning its best record against Fairleigh Dickinson (5-0).
Lehigh and Sacred Heart have played five times in their history with the Mountain Hawks taking each of the last two meetings. After a seven-year hiatus, the teams met last season as the Mountain Hawks won 91-77 and in doing so, C.J. McCollum became the Patriot League's all-time leading scorer in that game. Sacred Heart won the first-ever meeting between the two sides, 58-56 on Nov. 29, 2003.
Sacred Heart has enjoyed an up-and-down season, beginning 0-4 but bouncing back strong with a 12-point win at Fordham followed by an overtime loss at Boston College out of the ACC. The Pioneers have featured an impressive offense, led by 118 points in a double overtime loss to Holy Cross. Three players average double figures, led by Evan Kelly (15.7) followed by Chris Evans (14.2) and Louis Montes. Tevin Falzon leads the team with 5.8 rebounds per game while Phil Gaetano owns a team-leading 3.8 assists per contest.
Following Sunday's game, Lehigh will hit the road to face its second straight NEC foe Saint Francis (Pa.) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks then return home to host UMBC next Saturday (Dec. 7) and LIU Brooklyn (Dec. 9) before a 12-day break for final exams. Tickets are available online, including a print-at-home option, or by calling the ticket office at 610-7LU-GAME (610-758-4263). Individual game tickets are only five dollars (in advance) and season tickets are also available.
