BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men's cross country senior Tyler Mueller will be the second-ever Lehigh male runner to participate in the NCAA Championships when he heads to Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday. The gun will go off at 12:00 p.m. for the men's 10K race that will be run on Indiana State's course. Live video of the race will be available via the NCAA.
"I'm extremely happy for Tyler because I know how hard he has worked," said head coach Todd Etters. "I'm very proud of what he did to get here. Our ultimate goal is to have a team that's competitive at the National Championships and to get there you have to start with some individuals like Tyler."
Mueller finished in eighth place at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship race with a time of 29:52 to earn his bid to Nationals. The Pottstown, Pa. native will be the second-ever male Lehigh runner to head to the NCAA Championships, following in the footsteps of former standout Evans Kosgei who made the trip in 2010. Kosgei finished 112th out of 246 runners with a time of 31:17.80.
Mueller crossed the line in first place at Patriot League Championships to be named Patriot League Runner of the Year and become the first Lehigh runner to ever accomplish the feat. His team-leading efforts this season led to two Patriot League Runner of the Week and two ECAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week honors. Mueller was also named to the Academic All-Patriot League team for the second straight year.
"I've made a lot of improvements and I never would have expected I'd be a contender in the Patriot League, let alone the region, when I got to Lehigh," said Mueller. "The training has been very consistent and has added up over the years and now I find myself as one of the better guys in the league and region. My goals just get higher every race and I'm ready to give it one more shot on Saturday."
The top 40 finishers at NCAA Championships will earn All-America plaudits from the USTFCCCA. Mueller hopes to become the first Lehigh runner to ever be named All-American.
