TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Lehigh men's cross country senior Tyler Mueller finished 67th out of 253 runners at the NCAA Championship race on Saturday. Mueller navigated the 10K course in 31:01.70 to become the highest finisher in Lehigh history.
"The race went out extremely hard and I was probably close to last place in the entire field about a half mile into the race," said Mueller. "It's a long race and I didn't let myself panic. I stayed patient and calm and kept trying to pass runners. I felt controlled and confident and was really able to enjoy the experience."
The Pottstown, Pa. native was the only Patriot League male runner to participate in the race. He was the fourth Mid-Atlantic Region runner to cross the line, behind only two from Villanova and one from Princeton.
"I passed probably about 20 guys in the final straight away," said Mueller. "I was passing guys who have been named All-Americans in previous years. Beating them was such an amazing experience and it was great to prove to myself that I deserved to be there."
Mueller was just the second Lehigh male runner to earn a bid to the championship race and followed in the footsteps of former standout Evans Kosgei who made the trip to Nationals in 2010. Kosgei finished 112th out of 246 runners with a time of 31:17.80.
Over 20 members of the Lehigh men's cross country team made the 10-plus hour drive to support Mueller during his race.
"I don't know if any team had as many fans come to the race as Lehigh," said Mueller. "When I saw all of my teammates and the effort they made to come out here, I wanted to run well for them as much as I wanted to run well for myself. Their support meant so much to me."
