Lehigh drops 2-0 final to American on Senior Day

11/2/2013 2:33:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team hung right with Patriot League regular season champion American, but the Eagles scored two first-half goals which stood as the difference in a 2-0 final on Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks trailed only 13-9 in shots and 5-4 in penalty corners and had several quality chances. However, Lehigh couldn't put one past American goalie Kate McBeath who finished with three saves on the afternoon.

"It was a competitive game," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "I think everyone on our team came to play. They really wanted to play for the seniors, and that showed. People stepped up at the right times, but we couldn't capitalize and finish. We had shots and we had opportunities; it was a really good game."

Before the game, Lehigh seniors Erinn Bonshak, Marie Mignogna and Caitlyn Mitchell were honored prior to their final games in the Brown and White.

"The senior class has been a part of the process of change, both in and out of season," said Blue. "I greatly appreciate that. They all came to play today; of course they wanted to win, but this has been a season of strides for us. I'm going to miss them."

Freshman goalie Julia Ward was strong in the early going, making a pair of saves in the fifth minute. However, American converted the game's first goal at the 7:23 mark when Natalie Konerth made a tip of an Isabel Terwindt shot past Ward to make it 1-0.

Sophomore Erin Ricker unleashed Lehigh's first shot in the 21st minute, which sailed wide. The Mountain Hawks tied American in shots (9-9) from that point forward and had several opportunities to put one past McBeath.

Lehigh pressured with a penalty corner and a pair of shots on goal in the 31st minute, but the Eagles scored their second goal just over a minute later to make it 2-0.

Second-half shots were even at four. Lehigh didn't put any on goal, but had a number of breakout opportunities that just missed. The Mountain Hawks' best chance came in the final minute as freshman Marissa Glatt was sprung all alone on goal, but McBeath came out strong to challenge as Glatt's ensuing shot went wide.

Final shots were 13-9 in favor of American while the Eagles held a 5-4 in corners. Ward finished with eight saves to wrap up a strong freshman campaign.

"This is a very young group. Looking ahead, our future is very bright," said Blue. "We have some speed, we have people who can score, we have defenders and a great midfield. We're looking forward to training in the offseason and coming back in the fall."
