BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's cross country team raced its way to the best finish in program history at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship with a seventh-place effort Friday on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. Senior Tyler Mueller finished eighth to become the second-ever Lehigh men's runner to be awarded a bid to the NCAA Championship race in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 23.
"The team really stepped up and ran well," said head coach Todd Etters. "Losing by two points at Patriot Leagues, we knew we had a really good team and we wanted to come out today and execute over 10K. We were very proud to finish where we did and it was a full-team effort."
Mueller finished the 10K race in 29:52, two seconds faster than his outdoor track school record of 29:54.25 that was set last spring. The Pottstown, Pa. native will be the second-ever male Lehigh runner to head to the NCAA Championships, following in the footsteps of former standout Evans Kosgei who made the trip in 2010.
"My goal going into the race was to make it to Nationals," said Mueller. "The race went out really hard and that played into my strengths a bit. I'm very encouraged by my time and so excited to go to Nationals."
Junior Ryan Mahalsky will also have a shot of heading to the championships when at-large bids are announced Saturday. Mahalsky finished 16th in the field of 179 runners with a time of 30:19. The junior will be counting on Georgetown, the third place team at regionals, to earn an at-large bid to the championships. Should Georgetown earn the bid, the Hoya runners would be taken out of the individual regional results and Mahalsky would be the fourth individual qualifying runner from the Mid-Atlantic region. The NCAA will announce at-large bids at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Villanova freshman Patrick Tiernan navigated the course in 29:37 to win the race and help the Wildcats to a first-place team finish with 34 points. Princeton finished in second place with 60 points, followed closely by Georgetown with 63. Penn (152), Penn State (175) and La Salle (188) placed fourth through sixth, respectively, as Lehigh's 240 team points put the Mountain Hawks in seventh place.
The Mountain Hawks were the highest finishing team in the Patriot League, as champion Navy finished right behind Lehigh in eighth place with 255 team points. American finished 12th followed by Bucknell in 13th.
Behind Mueller and Mahalsky, other Lehigh runners also had impressive finishes. Sophomore Evan Hardy finished in 34th place with a time of 31:04. Senior Ryan Knouse (32:14) placed 87th, freshman Alex Fitzgerald (32:26) finished 95th, junior Simon Voorhees (33:09) came in 118th and junior Casey Gilboy (33:12) finished 121st.
Mueller hopes to be joined by Mahalsky when he heads to Terre Haute next Saturday, Nov. 23, to compete in the NCAA Division I National Championship race. The 10K is set to begin at 12 p.m.
