BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Coming off a second place finish at the Patriot League Championship meet, the Lehigh men's cross country team will host the NCAA Division I Cross Country Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship on Friday. The men's 10K race is slated to begin at 12 p.m. on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course, followed by the women's 6K at 1:15 p.m.
The Mountain Hawks will head into the meet ranked seventh in the most recent Mid-Atlantic regional rankings. Princeton sits atop the rankings, followed by Villanova and Georgetown in second and third, respectively. Patriot League Champion Navy is the only league school ahead of Lehigh in the rankings, as the Mids sit in fifth place.
Lehigh finished eighth at last year's event, which was the best finish for the men's team since tying with Penn State in 2005 for the same position when Lehigh hosted the event. The Mountain Hawks combined to score 254 points as Ryan Mahalsky finished as the top performer for the first time last season in the 10K race.
Behind Mahalsky, Tyler Mueller was the next Mountain Hawk to cross the finish line as he placed 48th with a time of 31:33. Casey Gilboy (31:47), Sam Bernitt (31:48) and Jimmy Miller (31:53) all finished in the top 60 as they took home 52nd, 53rd and 56th, respectively, as part of the tight Lehigh pack. Georgetown finished the race in first place.
In their most recent race, the Mountain Hawks came up just two-points short of their second straight Patriot League crown as Navy took the league title. The second-place finish was the third straight year that Lehigh has finished in the top three.
Senior Tyler Mueller won the individual title and was named Patriot League Runner of the Year, becoming the first ever Lehigh runner to accomplish the feat. Mueller has enjoyed a standout senior campaign, earning two Patriot League Runner of the Week and ECAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week honors.
Mahalsky took third at the Patriot League Championship meet, finishing just 35 seconds behind Mueller and being named first team All-Patriot League in the process. Junior Casey Gilboy finished in 15th place, narrowly missing second team All-Patriot League honors.
