LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lehigh volleyball team responded from a hard-fought loss on Friday by pulling out a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-22, 25-21) at Bucknell Saturday. Junior Jade Van Streepen led the way with 16 kills and a .333 hitting percentage while seniors Amanda Clark and Rachel Charles helped lead the charge as well. With the win, Lehigh improves to 13-5 on the season and 5-2 in Patriot League play.
Â
"I think our effort was good, but our execution wasn't as crisp or refined as it usually is," said Lehigh head coach Bob Bertucci. "We showed some signs of fatigue from last night's match. It was a pretty quick turnaround for us. We had a very emotional, hard fought match against Colgate. Coming up here to Bucknell, we knew we weren't going to get an easy match."
Â
Tied at three in the first set, Lehigh won four straight points capped off by a kill from sophomore Ana Vrhel to take a 7-3 advantage, a lead it wouldn't relinquish. The Bison pulled within 11-10, then the Mountain Hawks responded with four of the next five points to take a 15-11 advantage. After going up by as many as six, Bucknell pulled within one (23-22), but Lehigh captured the last two points as a kill from Van Streepen finished off the 25-22 victory.
Â
Lehigh took a 4-1 lead in the second set before Bucknell eventually pulled even at 12. The Mountain Hawks regained their three-point lead behind a service ace from senior Courtney McCutchan and attack error by Bucknell, which made it 23-20. Leading 24-22, Van Streepen finished off a kill to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead in the match.
Â
The Mountain Hawks again jumped out to a third-set lead, breaking a 2-2 tie by scoring eight of the next 10 points to take a 10-4 advantage following a Van Streepen kill. Lehigh held onto the six-point lead until the Bison made one last push to pull within 24-21, but Clark gave Lehigh a 25-21 third-set victory and the 3-0 sweep.
Â
Clark finished with seven kills while Charles had 18 digs.
Â
"I thought we saw a really good performance from Amanda. She was strong throughout the match and was a difference at the net," said Bertucci. "Rachel turned in a great performance in passing and defense as well as serving."
Â
"The girls put out a good effort, but you could see fatigue in their play," he continued. "It was good enough to win in three, so that's a good thing. You hear coaches say, an ugly win is better than a pretty loss."
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday (Oct. 12) when they host American at 4 p.m. at Leeman-Turner Arena in Grace Hall.
Â
"I think we have to continue to improve in terms of our ability to stay focused throughout a whole match," said Bertucci. "When we're playing strong teams, we seem to take little breaks, like last night against Colgate. We are hanging together as a team well and we need to continue to maintain our intensity throughout the whole match."
