Lehigh falls 3-1 to American

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team fell 3-1 to American on Saturday afternoon inside Leeman-Turner Arena. The Mountain Hawks claimed the first set, but American rallied to claim the following three and win its 20th match of the season.

"American played well once they felt out what we could do in the first set," said head coach Bob Bertucci. "We came out to play, but American did some great things out there. I thought Amanda Clark and Rachel Charles played very well today."

The Mountain Hawks got out to an early 9-5 lead in the first set and remained in control for the remainder of the set. The Eagles tried to battle back from the early deficit and eventually pulled within one at 22-21, before kills from Mountain Hawk junior Jade Van Streepen and sophomore Ana Vrhel put the set away 25-21. Lehigh's stingy defense limited American to just a .071 hitting percentage in the first set as the Mountain Hawks took a 1-0 lead.

Lehigh once again got out to an early lead in the second set, 7-4, but American pulled close in a set that proved to be a fierce battle between the two teams. The teams exchanged points and six tie scores until they found themselves tied at 22. Thanks to three straight kills from Eagles junior Kristyna Lindovska, American closed out the second set 25-23 to even the match up at one apiece.

American grabbed a 12-9 lead to open up the third set. The Mountain Hawks slowly battled back, with the help of an 8-2 run, to trail by only one at 23-22. American was able to pull away due to a Lehigh attack error and a kill from Lindovska and the Eagles claimed a 25-22 victory and 2-1 advantage in the match.

American picked up where it left off in the fourth set, quickly getting off to a 12-3 lead thanks to a 9-0 run. The Mountain Hawks were never able to recover as the Eagles claimed a 25-12 set win and 3-1 match victory.

Van Streepen led the way for the Mountain Hawks with 15 kills followed by senior Amanda Clark with 12. Sophomore Amy Matula notched five sneaky kills while recording 43 assists. Senior Rachel Charles notched a season-high 24 digs.

Next up for the Mountain Hawks will be a trip to Easton to take on rival Lafayette on Friday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. The match will serve as the second of the season between the foes, with Lehigh grabbing a 3-1 win in the first game.
