
Mountain Hawks welcome American on Saturday for key Patriot League battle

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team faces a tough test on Saturday afternoon inside Leeman-Turner Arena as the Mountain Hawks host American for a 4 p.m. match.
Lehigh heads into the match looking to continue strong play during a tough stretch. The Mountain Hawks have won five of their last seven, all against Patriot League teams. Lehigh stands at 13-5 overall with a 5-2 league record.
In its most recent match, Lehigh handed Bucknell a 3-0 loss on the Bison's home court. The Mountain Hawks never trailed in the match, maintaining control through all three sets. Junior Jade Van Streepen led the team with 16 kills to go along with seven digs. Sophomore Amy Matula racked up 40 assists in the match.
Van Streepen leads the team with 177 kills on the season and junior Kaylynn Genemaras is close behind with 172. Matula has accumulated a team-leading 598 assists. On the defensive side of the net, senior Rachel Charles has shown consistency, averaging 4.69 digs per set. The Mountain Hawks continue to impress in the service game averaging 1.94 service aces per set, which serves as third best in the nation.
American is coming off a 3-1 home loss to Army, which served as the Eagles' first Patriot League loss of the season. Before the Eagles' trip to Bethlehem, the team will travel to Colgate Friday night trying to avenge a 2012 Patriot League championship loss to the Raiders. The perennial Patriot League power has lost just two games this season and will head into the weekend with an 18-2 record and 4-1 league mark.
The 3-1 loss broke up a win streak of eight, with four in a row coming by way of 3-0 shutouts. American is led by junior Kristyna Lindovska who sits atop the Patriot League in kills with 227. Monika Smidova has averaged a Patriot League leading 10.51 assists per set.
American leads the all-time series 24-4 with the teams splitting last season's matches.
Following Saturday's contest, the Mountain Hawks will have six days to prepare for archrival Lafayette on Friday, Oct. 18. The match will be the second of the season against the Leopards, with Lehigh taking the first one 3-1.
