BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's cross country team will look to defend its Patriot League title this Saturday as the Mountain Hawks head to Easton to compete in the Patriot League Championships. The 8K race will be held at Lafayette's Metzgar Athletic Complex and will start at 11 a.m. The Mountain Hawks won the championship at last year's event for the first title in program history.
"It would be another mark in the history books," said head coach Todd Etters. "Anytime you win, whether it be the first, second or third time, it means a lot. Our goal is to leave Lafayette on Saturday with a repeat championship."
Lehigh won last year's race with 54 team points, followed closely by Navy with 56 points. The Mids had won four straight championships prior to the Mountain Hawks win. Etters was awarded Coach of the Year due to his efforts in guiding the team to its first title, while four Lehigh runners garnered All-Patriot League honors.
The Mountain Hawks will have their work cut out for them this year as six Patriot League schools, including Lehigh, are regionally ranked. Navy maintains the top spot among league squads in the Mid-Atlantic Region, but is closely followed by Lehigh (No. 8), American (No. 11), and Bucknell (No. 15). The men's Northeast Region has Army (No. 11) and Boston University (No. 12).
The Mountain Hawks will look to senior Tyler Mueller to lead the charge at Saturday's race. The two-time Patriot League Runner of the Week has claimed two individual titles this year, while also becoming Lehigh's highest finisher since 1976 at the prestigious Paul Short Run when he crossed the line in sixth place. The Pottstown, Pa. native finished in first place out of 272 runners at the Princeton Invitational in his most recent race with a new personal-best time of 23:36. Mueller finished in seventh place at last year's title-winning race.
Senior Jimmy Miller led the way at last year's race coming in fourth place, while junior Ryan Mahalsky finished right behind in fifth place. Mahalsky has been one of the Mountain Hawks' most consistent runners this fall and won his first-ever collegiate race at the season-opening Lehigh Invitational.
In their most recent races, the Mountain Hawks took fifth place at the Princeton Invitational and fourth at the Leopard Invitational. Each of the Lehigh runners that were sent to Princeton recorded a new personal best time to capture fifth place amongst regionally and nationally-ranked competitors.
"Our confidence level is the highest that it's been all season based on how we raced at Princeton and Lafayette," said Etters. "The guys are ready to go. They know what they have to do and they're really focused on that goal."
After Saturday's race, the Mountain Hawks will gear up to host the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Qualifier race on Nov. 15. The regional race will be held on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course.
