Lehigh pulls out 3-2 win over Georgetown

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Lehigh field hockey team jumped out to an early lead and held off a Georgetown comeback attempt for a 3-2 win over the Hoyas on Sunday afternoon. Senior Kim Eng and junior Emily Torcivia scored in the game's first 7:15, sophomore Lindsay Metzger added a second-half tally and sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson made six saves for her first win of the season.
“The effort was consistent today,” said Lehigh assistant coach Susan Ciufo. “We were able to generate some really good scoring opportunities early, which we capitalized on to set the tone for the rest of the game.”
The win is Lehigh's second in its last three games and second in as many Sundays. The victory also snapped a two-game losing streak against Georgetown, marking Lehigh's first win against the Hoyas since 2009 and first on the road since 2005.
“Our defense held down the backfield and we were able to stop a lot of their opportunities,” said Ciufo. “Sydney had a great game in the cage for us as well.”
Eng got Lehigh off to a fast start just 4:21 in when she converted a penalty stroke for a 1-0 advantage. Torcivia doubled the lead less than three minutes later, backhanding a shot past Georgetown goalie Briana Pereira to make it 2-0 at 7:15.
Both sides got their chances from there, but couldn't cash in as Lehigh took the two-goal lead into halftime. Maltinsky-Wilson finished with three first-half saves. One close call came late in the first half when an Annie Wilson penalty stroke hit the post.
Georgetown quickly cut into the lead just 1:18 into the second half. However, Lehigh had an answer. Just 6:36 later, Metzger - the reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week - put home a rebound to make it 3-1. Both teams continued to have chances, leading into a Hoyas' goal by Charlotte Tierney which made it 3-2 at 61:27. But the Lehigh defense bore down and didn't allow a shot for the remaining 8:33.
The Hoyas held a 19-8 edge in total shots and 6-5 in penalty corners. Maltinsky-Wilson made six stops while senior Carly Smith had a defensive save, across Pereira who finished with two.
The Mountain Hawks will return home for two next weekend to host Sacred Heart on Friday (7 p.m.) and Monmouth on Sunday (12 p.m.).
