Mountain Hawks fall to #6 Penn State

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team generated six shots on goal and six penalty corners, but couldn't convert as the Mountain Hawks dropped an 8-0 final to #6 Penn State on Friday evening. The combination of freshman Sophie Fitzpatrick and sophomore Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson combined for 11 saves while Lehigh added four defensive saves, including two from junior Marie Mignogna who played a strong all-around game. The Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back Sunday when they head south to face Georgetown at 4 p.m.
“I think we had some really good opportunities we didn't capitalize on, but it's nice to see we can do those things against a team like Penn State,” said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. “If we take away from giving up so many corners, we should be fine going forward.”
The Nittany Lions took an early 1-0 lead at the 3:01 mark, but Lehigh came right back with a penalty corner of its own. Freshman Erin Ricker unleashed a hard low shot, but Penn State goalie Ayla Halus came up with the save.
Penn State went on to take a 3-0 lead behind goals from Kelsey Amy. Hannah Allison scored the Nittany Lions' third goal off a corner at 14:13 to make it 4-0.
From there, Lehigh held the Penn State offense in check, allowing only one goal over the next 26:10. In that stretch was a pair of defensive saves, first by sophomore Abby Sprinkel then by Mignogna, who batted away a Brittany Grzywacz drag flick at 25:11.
The Nittany Lions added three goals in the second half, but Lehigh earned chances of its own. The Mountain Hawks' best opportunities came at 44:00 when they had three consecutive corners. Mignogna and sophomore Steph Fratoni also added a defensive save in the second.
Final shots were 30-9 in favor of Penn State while the Nittany Lions held a 9-6 edge in corners. Ricker and junior Emily Torcivia each had two shots on goal to lead the way for Lehigh. Fitzpatrick made four saves while Maltinksy-Wilson had seven. Halus finished with one for Penn State before Kylie Licata made five over the final 55:47.
Lehigh will head to Georgetown on Sunday to face the Hoyas, in a game to be played at the University of Maryland. The Mountain Hawks will return home for two next weekend to host Sacred Heart on Friday (7 p.m.) and Monmouth on Sunday (12 p.m.).
