Mountain Hawks drop hard-fought 5-2 final at Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team fought back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the score, but gave up three late tallies in a 5-2 defeat to Penn on Friday evening. Senior Kim Eng and sophomore Lindsay Metzger scored for the Mountain Hawks while sophomore Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson made a career-high 14 saves in the defeat. Lehigh will look to bounce back on Sunday when it hosts Saint Francis (Pa.) at 3 p.m.
The game got off to a very defensive start, with few shots or shots on goal. Both offenses began heating up midway through the first half. It appeared the Mountain Hawks scored the game's first goal at the 28:17 mark off the game's first penalty corner, but the shot came from outside the circle and wasn't touched.
Just 1:14 later, Penn got the scoring started when Sarah Hasson put one past Maltinsky-Wilson off a scramble in front.
Lehigh picked up the pace offensively, earning some glittering chances from in close - most notably from senior Eng and freshman Taylor Mygatt - but Penn goalie Carly Sokach stood tall.
The Quakers then earned their first penalty corner with less than a minute remaining, and Sunny Stirewalt capitalized to make it 2-0 at 34:40.
Eng cut the deficit in half less than five minutes into the second stanza, blasting a shot into the upper right corner to make it 2-1 at the 38:27 mark.
Penn put on the pressure over the ensuing minutes, but Maltinsky-Wilson came up with some strong saves. That led into the tying goal as Metzger put one in off a penalty corner. The initial chance wasn't fully cleared, allowing freshman Abigail Bakke to make a quick pass to Metzger on the doorstep, who did the rest. That made it 2-2 at 55:45.
However, the Quakers quickly retook the lead just 2:14 later, as Julie Tahan blasted a shot into the back of the cage. Penn added late goals at 66:40 and 69:56 to pull away for the victory.
Penn held a 24-6 edge in shots, 10-2 in penalty corners. Maltinsky-Wilson made 14 saves while freshman Katherine Koomar added a defensive stop.
The Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back on Sunday when they welcome Saint Francis (Pa.) at 3 p.m.
